The monalisa has been around for a long time. Yet it is one of the most mentioned paintings. Unlike other paintings by leonardo, or any other artist of the reneissance, it is very known.

When I first came face-to-face with Mona Lisa in the Louvre several years ago, I knew the portrait was of a flesh-and-blood woman named Lisa Gheridini (Monna being a contraction for mia donna, or "my lady"), the wife of a wealthy Florentine merchant named Francesco del Giocondo (which is why the Italians have always called the painting La Gioconda), painted in oil on wood between 1503 and 1507 by Leonardo da Vinci, one of the three greatest masters of the Renaissance.

And what did I see? The "strange, almost magic charm which the portrait of Mona Lisa has for even the least enthusiastic natures." What was most "irresistible and intoxicating" was the expression. The sinuous, serpentine mouth, turned up at the corners mocks the viewer with such sweetness, grace and superiority that we feel timid, like children in the presence of a duchess. So the head, with its violet shadows, half-perceived as through a black gauze, makes you dream for hours, and pursues you in memory . . . repressed desire and desperate hopes struggle painfully through a luminous shadow. And you discover that the melancholy springs from the fact that La Gioconda received, centuries ago, the confession of our love with the same mocking smile that she still wears today.

Over and over again, these particular aesthetic qualities have captivated art lovers like me, who have perhaps dreamed of being transported by the painting of the woman who smiles, to those times when taste and sensibility were cultivated and valued. When a woman’s best asset was a man’s imagination.

The mystery surrounding why and who she was..
Today in the news it was announced that the Mona Lisa is Mona Lisa Gherardini the wife of Francesco Del Giocondo it was also revealed that her body is buried in the cemetery outside of a church that has been condemned and is being demolished..there are plans to excavate her remains and create images such as were done with King Tut to see if these match.
This is one of the greatest discovery's in the art world if this is com firmed. The story has been on CNN all day today.
Giuseppe Pallantini claims to have all this information based on family records and bloodline documentation...check it out!
she was the wife of a tradesman and died in 1542 at the age of 63< this is the first time any proof has been presented that her remains exist. the painting was done in 1503-1505..you should also read "The Day The Mona Lisa was Stolen" another great story about the painting...it measures 76.8 cm by 53cm and reside in the Louvre in Paris for eternity....this discovery by Giuseppe will change the art world theory's forever if proven true!!!!

The Mona Lisa is so popular because of her powerful gaze and the mastery with which she was painted. Da Vinci did something magical here, when he painted this portrait. I saw the Mona Lisa in Paris and the painting feels as if it's alive! Her eyes seem to follow you as you walk in front of it. Quite extraordinary! It was painted by a genius of the Renaissance and it does not disappoint! He painted this image but it's more than a painting. The Mona Lisa commands a presence! I don't know how he did it but this painting will continue to fascinate because it's so much more than paint. She seems to transcend the canvas. You feel her reality! And you can't deny the fact that that is an amazing accomplishment to create such an effect as to endow a work of art to feel as human as this one does!

The Mona Lisa i'd say is the most popular of Da Vinci's work because of the mystery of the painting,
Some say she was a lover, some say she is a hidden self portrait of the master himself, he had the painting by his side until the day he died, it was also very improtant to the renaissance era because the paint also brought in the ida of perspective.

It is a great study on the feminine form, and the story behind it is pretty intriguing.

Some of the interesting studies on it include theories on DaVinci modeleing it after himself, secret histories buried underneath the layers and different versions of the mona lisa, and interesting stories of mona lisa's husband, Giacondo.

Look into it!
