Because it is more common to have a car in Los Angeles due to the fact that everything is more spread out than in New York.

From personal experience if you get a Los Angeles County based taxi they are quite cheap. However if you get an Orange County based taxi they are quite more.

A couple factors go into play on cost of taxi service in LA compared to NY. First, the cost of gas is usually higher in LA compared to NY, so fuels costs are passed on. Secondly, insurance costs are also passed on, which again are higher for us Californians compared to other parts of the country. Lastly, and most importantly, its the basic law of economics of supply and demand. Since the demand is not as great in LA as NY for cab service, Taxis need to charge more in order to stay profitable.

well because their are more cars in los angeles new york on the other has better public transportation
