A potential VFW applicant must have served overseas and earned a campaign, service medal or insignia recognized by the VFW as meeting the requisite for VFW membership. (The only exceptions are a combat action ribbon, imminent danger pay or for service in Korea after June 30, 1949, until present.)

By DAR I assume you mean Daughters of the American Revolution...if that's the case, the answer is no to both.
In order to join the American Legion, you must have served in the military and been stationed overseas; getting in the VFW is a little tougher, because VFW stands for Veterans of Foreign Wars; that means you have to have served in a combat zone during an armed conflict in order to be accepted for membership.

No, only Veterans can be members of the American Legion. The VFW is for Veterans who actually fought in country.
