It's uncanny. They come from two different cultures that were basically isolated from each other. Yet they say almsot EXACTLY the same thing. Don't lie, cheat, steal, kill.

That one about adultery is even there in a suttle way: "I will not engauge in sexual activity that can bring hurt."

How do you explain this? Did it come from one common source?

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, Gutama (Buddha) taught the "8 fold path."

What these ideas come down is basic human values that are not limited to this culture or that culture!
Do not look at this as rules from a God but rather in how everyone wants to be treated.
There is nothing supernatural in either!
There are no supernatural claims in either!
ONLY HUMAN VALUES ARE IN THESE THINGS NOT EVIDANCE OF A GOD!!!

Over the past few days I have read many discussions on these boards, and have begun to doubt the sincerity of many of the posters. It seems as if more trolls that seekers are on the board. However, should you be one of the minority of sincere questioners, this is the best answer I can give you:

I read once a discussion on Amazon.com that discussed this very question. However, I did not bookmark it, so I can't point you to it. However, a quick google brought this page, and it may lead you to the discussion. In any case, should you be sincerely interested, the book this web page discusses will also help you find your answer. I will post the page here, under "source" - I hope it helps you.

And, if you are not really interested, please accept my apology for not having some glib insult to you, to Jews, and to Buddhists.

The Ten Commandments are general laws and are considered the most basic laws of society. However it is interesting how modern government does not even follow all of them. In the United States, for example, adultery is not a crime, coveting is not a crime, skipping the Sabbath is not a crime, worshiping other gods is not a crime, making idols is not a crime, using God's name in vain is not a crime................... It really makes a fool out of the justice system if those basic laws are not put into effect. I mean at least the government should try to get 5 out of 10.

I don't think the ten commandments and the 8 fold path are that close.

The ten commandments are, well, COMMANDMENTS on how to worship and ethical conduct.

The eightfold path is a PATH to wisdom, ethical conduct and concentration.

Perhaps you're thinking of the five precepts?

Because all religious belief is based on basic human decency.
By the way there are some who say religion was invented to control crime and sexuality in human societies and I tend to agree.
