I've recently heard an argument that concluded that two parents aren't a privilege but are a basic right. Admittedly there are curcumstances (death of a parent, mental instability, rape, etc...) where this is absolutely not going to happen. But in general do Americans (or whomever is reading this) in general see 2 parents as a right children should be granted, or does it get treated more as a privilege that those born in the right circumstances recieve (and no I don't mean that as a slam on one parent homes)?

I don't think it is a right or a priviledge. In most homes it just is. However, if a couple does not get along and is fighting in front of the child and slandering each other to the child, they are better off divorced and the bottom line is that it is then better for the child. I really don't know in this modern age what is the "right circumstances". I am 62 and was a teen when "nice girls" didn't do "it" and you never ever got pregnant or were sent away to have the baby and give it up for adoption. Abortions were not legal then either. Now we have two parent families (heterosexual and homosexual), mixed race couples, single moms and dads, babies conceived the old fashioned way and artificially inseminated and Invetro Fertilization. We have grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. raising other family member's children. We have foster children and adopted children. The important thing is that the children be loved, be protected so they can feel safe, taught values/morals, live in a stable environment and be allowed to get a good education. All the rest really doesn't matter.

Children do not have a "right" to a two parent household. Neither is it a "privilege" It is a circumstance of life.

Stuff happens. If parents do not get along ( or are not able to be together for some reason) then that is just too bad.

And some children are "privileged" to have two parents who fight like cats and dogs! Some privilege!!

I think that when people say that children have the right to be raised in a two parent family, that is really code for...

Men have the right to have a woman be attached to them to be their personal servant for life BECAUSE children have the right to be raised in a two parent family

and

Men have the right to have lineage traced paternally BECAUSE children have the right to be raised in a two parent family

You get the point here.

For a millennial before modern religion, families were traced through the Mother's side of the family.

If children are cared for and loved, it doesn't matter how many care takers they have. If they are neglected and in poverty, like what happens when men leave their families, children will not thrive. But they do not have the right.

its not a right. most children born into a two parent household do have some advantages over a one parent household. ( i do not say ALL children have advantages because you have some parents who are cruel child abusers who deserve to be fed to the sharks, so not all children born to two parents have it good.)
people are going to do what makes them feel good( ie: affairs, divorce and so forth) so even if a child is born to two parents it doesn't mean that both the parents will always be there for the child.
how would you "grant " children two parents? are we next going to moderate who can have children and who can't based on if there are two parents or not? and how will you guarantee those two will stay together after having a child?

Statistics show that children who are raised by a mother and father will more likely grow up to be secure and stable adults who in turn will nurture their own children the say way. So I believe children have a right to a stable home environment.

The Bible says,"A man shall leave his parents(plural)and cleave unto his wife and the two shall become one flesh." Does a child have the right to live with both arms and both legs?

i personally think that children have the right to a HAPPY and SAFE home. and if that means that they only be raised by one parent, than that is the best thing for them
