Most people that have MRSA carry it with them for the rest of their lives even if they are not showing symptoms. The bacteria can live on the skin, the nasal cavity, and inside the colon for years without any harm. The danger arrises when the person is weak from an operation (or spreads it to someone who is) or for another reason (diabetes, cancer) then the Staph can cause devestation and even death.

Yes, I'm an Infection Control nurse, and once you have been diagnosed with MRSA- you'll always have it. The thing is that if you're not "symptomatic" or displaying signs of the active infection, you're considered "colonized" with the bacteria, but are still considered contagious, so remember to always use good handwashing techniques.
