how do you apply spin to a needle shaped cylinder?

ok this is more of one of my own experaments but if you had a large nedle shaped pice of would and you needed it to have spirle / increse speed how would you do that

You can wrap a piece of string around it and pull the string or apply the edge of something spinning - a tire or the edge of a rotary sanding pad- to it.
