Nothing. Since this could go on for quite some time, it would get weird to say something after each hiccup. In comparison, if someone has a sneezing fit, chances are you only said "bless you" once or twice. But it is polite to offer them a drink of water, or something.

This is probably not the type of answer you are looking for.. but when a friend of mine has the hiccups, I tell them something that will startle them - a lie .... like 'hey you know I really didn't appreciate what you said to Jenny about my outfit the other night...'. The friend is totally shocked and then says what ??? Then I start laughing and ask 'Is your hiccups gone? works EVERY time !

I say nothing usually. Once my brother (age six) had a horrid case of hiccups round bedtime.
My mum told him that he had overspent his pocked money and would have none for two weeks.
He immediately shrank down in his bed and did not hiccup again!
After a minute or so, she smiled and told him his hiccups were cured, and the only reason to say he would have no money wa toscare him!
So, fear did work at least once!

P.S. Would never worked on me, I always made sure I had a bit of money in my pocket.

The person doing the hiccups should say "Excuse me!"

I just smile. Not necessary to say anything.

Buut, if that person tells me he/she doesn't know how to get rid of hiccups, I tell them to eat a teaspoon of sugar.

Nothing, I just tell them to get a drink of water (and drink it backwards of course) then jump out at them from a cupboard in a dark room.
