Everyday I fill my cat's water dish and then go to work. When I come home the bowl is upside down and all the water is all over the floor. There are two obvious problems here - First, she gets really dehydrated and second, I have to clean the water everyday! She's the only pet in the house and I live alone, so I know it's her and I have tried everything - heavy ceramic bowls, rubber bottom bowls, cat mats that grip the floor, putting her dish inside of a second dish, I have a cat dish that looks like a water cooler and I have tried those lifted food dishes - she knocks them all over.
Why does she do this and what can I do to prevent this?

It's possible that she/he is just playing with the water and using it to bathe and not thinking ahead to the fact that it will have nothing to drink later on. I got my kittens a water fountain from Drinkwell that continously cycles water. It would be nearly impossible for them to tip it over. They seem to like it a lot. Another thought I have is maybe you should have a few water bowls around and see if maybe she/he tips one over but drinks from the others? Good luck to you!

Thats so funny. She must be a tough kitty to knock over the heavy ceramic bowl. Some animals get upset when left alone and it sounds like she is throwing a tantrum. Try putting the bowl inside a baking pan. Then when she does tip it it will pour into the pan. She can have her fit and still have water for later.

Start placing her water bowl in your bathtub. She's playing with the water. Some cats do. What I do for a cat who does that is fill the bathroom sink a little with water when I'm gone and she plays with that and leaves her water bowl alone. She may need more toys and stimulation, too, while you're gone. Telephone her a couple of times during the day so that she can hear you as the answering machine is picking you up. Call loudly and cheerfully to her, "Here KITTY KITTY KITTY! Mommy LOVES you!" type stuff to soup her up. And, leave the television on a movie channel so that she hears human voices all day. Provide new cardboard boxes with door holes cut here and there in them, changing them out once a week for newness. Leave newspaper tented up in a long tunnel on the floor for her to dash through, or several brown paper bags. It's about new things that keeps her bright eyed and sassy.

My cat used to do that also so we went and got him a kitty cafe. This is like an table for cats. It holds two bowls one for food and one for water. He hasn't knocked that over since we got it but he has started putting his food over in the water dish so atleast you don't have to clean up water...just change it.

I think maybe she is bored. I have a cat that did that too. Eventually she stopped, but she also gets to go outside
in the day. My cat would get on the counter and knock off
a glass of water every night. Its weird and I am interested to
see what others have to say about this behavior... Sassy
eventually stopped, but it took her a while. On occasion she
will do the same thing... Good Luck

My cat used to do this all the time and it drove me crazy. I got her one of those water cooler things like you mentioned--she knocked it over! What worked for me was this: 1) put the water cooler in a shallow plastic tray and put bricks on either side of it (so she can't move it side to side). 2) put a brick on top of the water cooler.

The whole thing is now way too heavy for her to budge. She seems uninterested in playing with the water now that she can't move the dish. I haven't come home to any puddles in months!

Is your cat by any chance a burmese or oriental? These breeds tend to like to try and bury their water bowls which could be a possibilty or else you may have a cat that like to play in water and so while playing tips it over to play with it on the floor our cat at work tips his water bowl and plays with the puddle.

They make bowls that can't be tipped over. Check at a larger petstore or online sources. Your cat won't get dehydrated unless she is losing fluids by vomiting or diarrhea. Just leave the lid up on the toilet at an emergency source.

There is a water dispenser online and in several stores inclduing Walmart that sales these things. You can secure them so that they cannot be tipped over and as the Cat drinks the water level drops.

Your cat could be seeing it's reflection thinking it is another cat .
try turning off the lights or put the water in a dark place also don't leave but a little water in its bowel.
if the cat keeps it up don't water it till you are at home and watch and see if you can figure out the problem.
