Murder is killing that is qualified by a particular circumstance such as use of superior force or premeditation. In some jurisdictions, the particular circumstance has to be proven beyond reasonable doubt as much as the fact that the allegation that the accused killed the victim. Failing that, the accused can only be found guilty of homicide at the most.

Murder is unlawful killing with malice aforethought. In otherwords, you kill with a pre-planned attack and with intention to end the persons life or cause grevious bodily harm.
You can kill without meaning it, or be guilty of constructive manslaughter if you are provoked or have diminished resposibilty. Can also kill without murder, by gross neglegence (ie messing up).

Killing could be regarded as self defense, which isn't murder.

I think murder is premeditated and killing is unplanned but caused by someone. Like drunk driving, you don't mean to kill someone but you were the cause and it wasn't your intention so it wasn't premeditated.
