I come from a family where it was considered normal to have sex with each other. Recently (after my parents were convicted and my sister was placed in a foster home) I found out that society frowns upon incest. My sister and I miss each other terribly and secretly still email.

What's wrong with showing a little brotherly love?

You are so full of it. There's no way that you could be so isolated that you didn't know that it was wrong, yet still be technologically "with it" to email regularly. I call BS.

1.) Incest increases the risk of birth defects. Yes, it doesn't make them inevitable, but if it raises them by even 10%...that means 100 incestuous relationships would lead to 10 kids who have to live with birth defects for the rest of their life. Isn't that enough to justify making a certain kind of sex act illegal? Retarded kids cost society A LOT to care for. (Of course, the counter argument is that getting drunk while pregnant probably raises the risk of birth defects much more, and that's legal). 2.) In actual practice, most incest is child molestation. We typically meet members of our immediate family when at least one of us is a minor. 3.) Power dynamics in a family mean it often would be difficult for one of the people involved to say "no". It might be difficult for a 16 year old to tell his mother "I love you, but not in that way". The child is completely dependent on the parent and trained to obey. This means many incestuous relationships can't really be seen as consensual. The royal family in ancient Egypt practiced incest. The common people didn't. (Some confusion has resulted from the fact the word "sister" was a common term of endearment in their love poetry. But today songs often call women "baby" and that doesn't mean the songs are about pedophilia.)

Brotherly love is fine bur brotherly sex is taboo. What country are you from? Not Mars eh?

RESPONSE:
Clearly, under the law of Moses, incestuous relationships were forbidden. The list of passages given above establish that clearly. What we must concern ourselves with is the situations where marital relations between closely related persons are reported in the Bible.

The word "incest" does not actually appear in the Bible. Rather, the law of Moses specifically describes the relationships which were forbidden. Our English word incest comes from the Latin incestus, designating sexual impurity. Incest is defined as "sexual intercourse between persons so closely related that they are forbidden by law to marry" (Merriam Webster's Deluxe Dictionary). What incest is will change from region to region, according to the local laws. For instance, if Bob's son passed away, and Bob desired to marry Joyce, his son's widow he could do so in Georgia or Oklahoma. However, if they lived in Texas or Tennessee, they could not. What is and what is not incest is dependent upon the laws of the land in which you dwell.

In Israel, the laws regarding what was and was not incest are outlined in Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Abraham and Sarah were not subject to these laws, since they pre-existed the law by over 400 years. Likewise, Amram and Jochebed were unaffected by the law of Moses, since their marriage also was prior to this law being given to Isra

there is nothing wrong with showing that u love your family just not in that way. it is considered to be wrong because u are related to those people and they are supposed to show and teach you how to live the rest of ur life, they have physically and physcologically hurt you even if you don't realize it, its just not rite, i'm not very good at explaining it but it isn't rite, it says in the bible and ur parents got in trouble for it so that shoul show you it is wrong. its disgusting your parents deserved whatever they got, they shouldn't be teaching u that kinda of stuff.

Incest is a taboo - not just because of the fact that the genetic problems that inbreeding could cause. It is wrong because it destroys the family unit and because it is often non-consensual.

Oh dear god. YES, incest is VERY wrong. You do NOT have intercourse with family members. It goes against the teachings of God, not to mention that children born of these unions will be deformed or retarded because of the gene factor. NORMAL?!! Good grief. You all need counseling.

Possibly because mixing blood lines causes mutations in genes?

I highly doubt that you are serious anyways.

Incest is awesome. However, broken condoms leading to mutant kids isn't.

That is nasty for one and that's why God gave us other people on the earth outside of our family for that sort of stuff.
