as He indicates in Matthew 25:31-46

He says : " I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me. "

We are not saved by deeds, we are saved only by the grace and mercy of God. But consider your gifts, your talents, your voction and your circumstances as a special trust from God with which to serve Him by serving others.

We are not responsible for doing all the good that needs to be done in the world, but we are responsible for doing what God has planned for us to do. Together we are better.

Tell me your thoughts.

Ed Snow, since you do not allow e-mail I say to you here that we must distinguis between the purpose of Jesus' coming to earth and the result. His design was to bring peace - peace with God for unbelievrs ( Rom 5:1 )and eventually peace of God for believers ( Phil 4:7 ). However te immediate consequence of Christ's coming was to divide those who were for Him and those who were against Him.

He came to free us from religions. Religions brought fights and war. He knew that people are going to kill in His name. And He was right. And people are ready to kill in the name of their gods. He wanted to show us the way...and it resulted a lot of bad things. But He knows how to have His job done.

Tucking...We do not get saved by our deeds, but they matter a great deal to God. Paul tells how to become a Christian and James goes more into detail how to go about once we are Christians.

I think deeds are extremely important but, as you rightly imply, it's why we do them that is as equally important.

We cannot 'earn' our way to heaven by works, as you said.

Our good deeds should be motivated out of thankfulness to our Lord and Saviour, for His love, mercy and tender care. This instills within us a desire to 'give something back' as it were.

Then we obey His command to love others, because He loved us first and showed us how by His example during His ministry.

My favourite piece of scripture on this subject is found in James chapter 2, verses 14 to 26:

What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
"But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds."
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?
Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend.
You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.
In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?
As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead."

God bless.

i'm a self proclaimed Christian because that's exactly what Jesus needs me to do. that is likewise what Paul says Christ needs me to do. Jesus stated i ought to bypass to the daddy with the help of him on my own and so did Paul. Paul many cases repeats the teachings of Jesus that each and every one strong issues come from God on my own. what percentage examples and factors are mandatory to work out the incontrovertible actuality that Paul and each and every of the Apostles were given the job of expounding upon what the Lord taught? enable's turn this question round and word in case you may refute the words of Paul with a contradiction by technique of Christ. do not ignore that no longer all who call themselves Christian associate themselves with Catholicism. i think that is the basis rationalization for confusion.

The only thing we carry from this life into our afterlife are our righteous acts (and our sins of course that are unrepented of) Our rewards in heaven will be based a great deal on these(righteous acts) and our faith also. Our punishment will be based on our sins(that are unrepented of). See Rev.14:13/Rev.19:8 concerning our righteous acts, and their importance. Our clothing in heaven is made up from our righteous acts here on Earth. How will you be dressed/undressed (either with honour or shame).
And for those of you who don't believe, one day you will, just hope that it isn't too late when you do (When you come face to face with your Creator).

Well what's the point if as you say: "We are not saved by deeds, we are saved only by the grace and mercy of God."

It seems to me it doesn't matter what you do on earth, as long as you ask forgiveness and accept Jesus. Now as for me I believe deeds on earth have a long way in determining what happens next, but then again i think the bible's a fancy paperweight.

Grace saves us, because there is nothing we can do to EARN salvation AND
I believe we show our love to God by living his Gospel message (works), however imperfectly but sincerely. He fills in the gaps.

remember the song - this little light of mine i'm gonna let it shine....

God gave us Jesus to light our ways.... Jesus saved us all, thus putting the Light in ourlives. once we accept Him it is our duty as Christians to share that light through thought, word and deed.

i think often on my actions and the role they have inthe lives of others and how i can do more to be a child of God. think of your parents - Godis our Father and thusly we should want to DO (aka actions) all that is pleasing to HIm.

there are also other versus that show - we are to DO as it is not by faith alone.....

Amen. I agree. We need to help more. I used to be scared to death to sing in church but I knew God wanted me to. He was tugging at my heart. I prayed really hard and in one week I was singing in church. I think that is one of the things that he wanted me to do because sometimes, songs get to the soul better than the sermon.
