Back in the old day they had the stick that would be a good way to teach that student...no I'm just playing. Flunking a student only if he/she is deserves an "F" due to his/her academic work, homework, handing assignments in on time etc. Don't flunk if you just hate the kid.

If they don't know the material required to pass, then yes, flunk them and have them repeat the grade. That's what is wrong with liberalism, they are afraid of hurting the stupid students feelings by flunking them so instead, they pass them up and out into the world and now, they are functional illiterates who cannot hold a job. Now, we give them welfare for the rest of their lives. Man, what a system!

Actually, the best way to teach a student would be to engage him or her early on in the course so that they were not in danger of failing.
Good teaching starts early, not when the student is near failing.
Early intervention and all that ...
Seriously, to answer the question there needs to be some more context to the situation. Yet, I wholeheartedly agree with the above in any situation.
Have a great week!

The real question: is flunking of a student a demonstration or failure of the teaching methods employed?

If the students work isn't satisfactory enough to pass then they deserve to flunk.

If you teach actions and consequences, maybe. But most students don't make that connection. They only see what the parents are going to do to them for getting bad grades. That is if they are lucky enough for their parents to even care.

if the kid did not get good enough grades to warrant a D-, then flunk the kid.
welcome to "real life"
the kid needs to learn that there are consequences to his/her actions
if you dont flunk the kid, then you have taught them that they do not need to work at all to get by. by far the wrong message.
you are not flunking them.... they are getting the grade that they earned.
