Practice practice practice. I find that if you go and practice in a secluded area, like a parking lot for instance where no one can really see you then if you mess up no biggie. You can try again and again until you feel comfortable. Draw out some cars on the cement with some sidewalk chalk or something and try to park between them.
Also make sure you are really comfortable with the car you are taking the test in. After you drive the same car for awhile, you get a feel for where the dimensions are. How far your bumpers stick out etc and that can make it easier for you to know how close you are to other vehicles.
Lastly, make sure you follow the instructions in your DMV drivers manual on parallel parking. Memorize them if need be and make sure you follow them well.
1) Pull up to the car in front of the spot you are going to park
2) Put on your blinker to signal to others that you are backing into the stall (remember traffic has to wait for you... so make them wait. Even if they lay on the horn and scream, they are suppose to let you park)
3) Back in till your tire begins to touch the curb and swing your wheel to the opposite side as you back in.
Just remember though, most people fail the parallel parking and you can fail that and still pass. So don't let that one test define your test. Stay calm is the most important thing you can do.
Oh and if your driving instructor starts screaming at you and getting in your face, you can report them. They are not suppose to be making you so frustrated that you will cause a real accident.
Hope this helps and good luck!

Practice practice practice that is the only way to pass the parallel parking. Dont let it hurt your self esteem believe it or not many people fail their tests the first time and often their second. When I took my test some 20 years ago I practiced parallel parking almost every day for 2 weeks because I knew that was the only thing I'd have problems with. Sure there were times I hit the curb, and times I hit the cones but the only way I got better was to practice. And you know what I passed the first time got 97 on the written and passed the driving. And in 20 yrs of driving legally I have NEVER had to parallel park I refuse to. If I have to parallel park I'd rather park down the road then go through that again!

My sympathies!! Unfortunately, I have seen many such disappointments at the road test. A few points to consider though going into your test.
1. You mentioned he checked off everything. In NJ, they make an x or check mark by each maneuver whether you pass that particular maneuver or not. The way you see if you did it wrong or right is if they put an x or check by the box for failing or passing, AND when you fail a particular thing, they write a whole long speech why they failed you for that particular thing. Check the piece of paper they gave you after the test to make sure they marked everything as wrong, or if they just marked you off for arallel parking.
2. It really makes a difference where you take the test. Some facilities are easier to take a test by. For instance, by Eatontown, many instructors will fail you for bumping the curb (even pretty gently) whereas, by many other facilities in the area, none of the instructors will fail for that.
Do not give up. Remember, failing does not go on your record.
Take some lessons by your local driving school, and practice, and you will you get your fair chance and join the ranks of drivers.
Best of luck!!

Practice parallel parking sir. It's not like they ask you to perform things that you cannot prepare for. Go practice and listen to Jock Jams Volume 1 while you do it. That's what I did and I passed without hitting a single person.

I dont mean to be rude or mean but some people just never get the hang of driving therefor never getting their drivers license. My boyfriends Mom is one of them. She just can't seem to grasp the art of driving, for some of us there is nothing to it, for others it is quite a task to learn and for others they just cant do it. All I can tell you is that practice makes perfect, practice practice practice! Practice as often as possible and especially focus on your weak points like parallel parking as you said. Just relax and focus on your driving when you are with the DMV instructor, pretend like they are not even there. I hope you pass this time and if not, there will be more chances later on, just keep practicing. Good Luck!
