Actually the temperature of the earth has increased less than 7/10 of 1 degree (C) from 1880 to 2005. That is an increase of about 1 degree (F) in 125 years. Certainly not an astounding increase like the previous person said. You may choose to believe that is global warming or you may not. Source: http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/2005/2005cal_fig1.gif There are numerous charts all over the internet showing the same. Some say that 1 degree is enough to impact the global climate, others say it's not. Most proponents of global warming think the earth's temperature has risen much more than that and don't even know that it has only risen by 1 degree. But the charts do not lie as do the proponents on both sides of this issue. The average temperature in Antarctica is 109 degrees below zero. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antarctica#Climate It seems to me 108 below (one degree warmer) is still pretty cold and not enough to melt anything. But there are those that say it will.

Back in the '70s all the hype was about global COOLING and another ice age was coming. I remember that they blamed pollution for that too. They said that all the pollution was darkening the skies and not as much sun was coming through so the earth was cooling off. It took many years to discover that they were mistaken and it was all just hype. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_cooling So when someone says, "the sky is falling" don't believe everything you hear on either side of the issue. There are Spin Doctors galore out there.

Most of the time people will form an opinion and not really be informed about the subject with which they become so opinionated about. So it's best that you not form your opinions from other's opinions, (as in this forum) but on the facts presented. (Many do not provide any proof or links to prove their point, just their opinion.) With that said we do have a responsibility to do our part by doing whatever is within your power to keep our planet alive and well.

I hope that helps...

EDIT:
ftm- That's what this forum is about. Ppl ask questions and other ppl answer. It matters not if we paste an answer or type it.

1. Your chart showing 2 degrees increase is of the Northern Hemisphere. My NASA chart shows the temperature of the EARTH, not just the northern hemisphere. In fact here is a site http://epa.gov/climatechange/kids/bigdea... from the EPA stating the global temperature has increased less than 1 degree over the past century. All the global charts show similar temp changes. None of them show 2 degrees. You need to compare apples to apples here and stop the manipulation of what is being said. Global means all the earth, not just the northern hemisphere.

2. The second reference I gave says, "Temperatures reach a minimum of between -85 °C and -89 °C (-121 °F and -130 °F) in the winter and about 0 °C (32 °F) higher in the summer months." If you AVERAGE the winter temps given with the summer temps, you come up with -109 degrees average for the year. Again you are manipulating the answer to say something it does not say. You HAVE to take the minimum and the maximum to get an average. I'm surprised you don't know that.

3. I never said global cooling had strong support, in fact I said it was hype. The article proves that it was just that.

Next you go on to say, "Scientists are predicting..." It's what they do, they say, "it could, it may, maybe, probably, we predict..." Where are the FACTS in predictions and maybe and probably? The truth is there are no facts in those words. They keep their jobs by keeping the hype going... most people can see that.

Last, I clicked on your references and they either go to a "file not found" or a type of blog site where ppl give opinions. We want facts - not opinions.

You have twisted what I said by adding northern hemisphere charts when I referenced global charts, you have played down the temps in Antarctica, when my facts are accurate and you have not really given any working links where we can check what you are saying.

Sorry but that won't work in this forum...

Some say that the ecosystem is so complex with so many actions and reactions that we mere mortals could not possibly have a large enough effect.

Some say that as the temp rises, so will the amount of water vapor (clouds) which reflect light/heat and cause cooling.

Then there is the "head in the sand" answer: "I am seeing no evidence of it in my backyard, therefor it must not be true."

Honestly, I do not think that there are any really good arguments saying global warming does not exist. A true consensus is forming, and it says that we can expect some rather serious climate change in the next 100 years if nothing changes.

There are several arguments, such as the climates run on cycles. For example, the last bad hurricanes we had were in the 60's. Another example is that there was a mini ice-age back in the 1800's.

According to the global warming experts, the result of the global warming is a rush of intense cold, such as what happened in the south recently.

I say that global warming is just the environmentalists not knowing science from beliefs. The would vote to ban di-hydrogen oxide if they thought it was bad for you, which it can be in large doses. It can kill you, cause you to drown, and if you don't get enough, you can die too!!!

The globe is warming. In the earth's history it is said to happen after ice ages. We are currently at the end of the most recent ice age. The ice caps are not really supposed to be there. After they have completely melted the planet will not be totally devastated. Their will be more water, greater temperatures. and considerably more volcanic activity. Global warming is not any creatures fault, it is a natural process, the earth has done many times in its 6.5 billion year history.

There are arguments against globol warming but I can't remember any because they are so irrelevant to me that I'm not going to waste my brain cells trying to convince myself otherwise.

Its obvious that it is happening. A huge chunk of ice burg broke off Antartica about 18 months ago and nobody told us about it untill this last Dec 2006. It was teh fastest traveling iceburg recorded moving 4 miles of the break point in a a couple days.

Also the summers are getting hotter and the winters colder. There is no argument about. I feel it happening and I hope that I die before the worst happens. THE END

Sea levels have not risen comes to mind. If important amounts of ice have already melted, why do we not see any rise in sea level? The only explanation is that the amount of ice that has melted is just not important on a global scale. If it isn't important on a global scale, how do you justify the word "global" in global warming?

There aren't any VALID arguments that it is not happening.

The arguments that currently are going on debate whether man-made CO emissions are accelerating the cyclic climate change.

Then again, when I was in elementary school in the late '70's, they were telling us an Ice Age was coming by 2000.

That's just it - there aren;t any good arguments.

They say stuff like, "Climate shifts on this scale have happened numerous times in the earth's history and in fact within human history".

Actually, they haven't. They are using sources that are six years old. Now you might think six years, what's the big deal? That's the problem. Not only has the average temperature passed anything the planet has seen in the last 12,000 years (somewhere back about 2003, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ice_Age_Temperature.png ), but the RATE of temperature change is absolutely astounding and accelerating. It is moving so fast, there is no time for new species to evolve; no time for anything to adapt. It's predicted that by 2080, it will pass anything the Earth has seen in the last 5 million years! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Five_Myr_Climate_Change.png , http://www.channel4.com/science/microsites/U/ukweather2080/5_predicting.html )

Or they say, "Most scientists suspect that there is a material human contribution to the present warming, through our emissions of CO2. Key word here is "suspect" - there's no actual, tangible, direct PROOF of it".

What you should know is there is never any proof of anything in the real world. The only place where something can be PROVEN is in mathematics. In science, there are only theories: Newton's theory of gravitation, Einstein's theory of relativity. And you have to admit, Newton's THEORY of gravity is pretty compelling. I, myself, have never seen anything fall UP. And, yet, we still call it a theory.

They talk about the Medieval Warm Period. Well ok, we went shooting past that back in 2003. Here's what the last 2000 years of temperature looks like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:2000_Year_Temperature_Comparison.png . But this graph just goes to 2004. The one in CO2science (visit link below) was done in 2006 and really shows how far we've gone.

"CapNemo" has been going to global warming questions and copying a statement pooh-poohing the threat. His statement is misleading and incorrect.

He says it’s only increased by 1 degree (F) in 125 years. Actually, it’s increased by twice that. If you look at the link below, the area in red is 1.1 degree (C) which converts to 2 degrees (F). He says, “The average temperature in Antarctica is 109 degrees below zero.” If you go to his source, that’s the number for the MINIMUM temperature, not the average. Then he says, “Back in the '70s all the hype was about global COOLING”. I was around then. I don’t remember any hype. And if you go to his source, it says, “The theory never had strong scientific support”.

The truth is that those 2 degrees are HUGE in the scale of average weather change. But the real problem is the speed of change and that it's accelerating.
Scientists are predicting a temp 4 to 8 degree (F) increase over the next 75 years. “This may not sound like a great deal, but just a fraction of a degree can have huge implications on the climate, with very noticeable consequences." (http://www.channel4.com/science/microsites/U/ukweather2080/5_predicting.html )

The link between CO2 and global warming is undisputed at this time. The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased by more than 50% over the last 115 years (250 to 381 ppm, http://awesomenature.tribe.net/thread/fcc70c8b-be7e-489b-85f7-6c6c08031c65 ). In the last 30 years, it increased at a rate 30 times faster than at any period during the last 800,000 years. In other words, this change is totally unprecedented. (http://awesomenature.tribe.net/thread/fcc70c8b-be7e-489b-85f7-6c6c08031c65 ). What else is totally unprecedented about the last 115 years? Industrialization and the population explosion. Duh. This is not rocket science; it is simple arithmetic!

"... the good news is that, within the foreseeable future, Maine residents will be able to stop banking their foundations and to store their down parkas and snow blowers in the barn permanently. The bad news is that a lot of those barns will be underwater" (http://awesomenature.tribe.net/thread/fcc70c8b-be7e-489b-85f7-6c6c08031c65 )

If global warming wasn't a real threat, why have 178 nations ratified the Kyoto Protocol to limit CO2 emissions? Why are the US and Australia the only two holdouts among the industrialized nations? (http://environment.about.com/od/kyotoprotocol/i/kyotoprotocol_2.htm )

CapNemo’s statement reminds me about the frog in the pot on the stove that doesn’t move as the water gradually gets hotter and hotter. From this seemingly insignificant 2 degree change, we’ve already seen enormous consequences. (http://www.davidsuzuki.org/Climate_Change/Impacts/ ) How much hotter does it have to get for some people to wake up and face the music? And in the meantime, while you’re pondering all of this, be sure to check the dates on people’s references. Things are changing so rapidly that older information is no longer useful.

There are self-interested people and groups doing everything they can to confuse and obfuscate the issues around global warming, similar to what the tobacco companies did back a few years ago, before they started losing lawsuits. These are a small group of very vocal people on the oil industry payroll (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=389313&page=16 ) and others whose livelihood and comfort depends on things continuing as they have been. Don’t be fooled.

It really doesn't matter. The people that think it's a myth will need "PROOF", so until the planet is dead they will believe what they are told to believe. I think it funny that the same people that wanted to start a war over the small chance that Iraq had weapons wont take any precautions for this possible danger. (That's because there's no money in it.)
