I would say the F-4 Phantom would kick the FA-18's butt, although it has no guns, but bigger missles and more of em. What do you think?

Sorry but your wrong twice. Early on in Viet-Nam when the Phantom was initially deployed, they didn't have close in guns. But after the pilots complained and started outfitting them on their own ,the later variants were outfitted with guns. Now head to head the F-18 would smoke the Phantom. Don't get me wrong, the F-4 is a great plane, but there is a reason we don't use them anymore. The Hornets quicker, more maneuverable, better armament, longer range lighter, better radar ,you name it it does it better.

The F4 can carry more armament and if need be disengage (run) faster but the FA 18 can turn inside the F4. The F4 is a stand off fighter designed to kill at a distance"Flying weapons platform" the F18 was designed for close in "knife" fights. So it would come down to which pilot could exploit the weaknesses of the other. By the way the F4 can take a heck of a lot of damage. And it can still come home on 1 engine. I'm not sure the F18 can.

FA-18 hands down that's why the Phantom is obsolete and no longer in service. The F4 was a great plane in it's day but the Hornet and Super Hornets are about the best dog fighting planes made today.

The F-4 was faster but the modern technology in the F-18s flight control system and weapons system allow it to dogfight better. If the F-4 did get a missle shot off, the F-18s agility should allow the F-18 to evade the missle.

sorry to say it but the f-18 is better it has more advanced avionics better engines more new technology such as the fact the f-18 flap controls are all computer controlled so manuvering is better unlike the f-4 that has to stick with tradional flying and as for weapons go fighters still use aim-9 side winders were invented around the time of the vietnam war so they were equiped on the f-4's and are still used today but the aim-9 sparows are much better and can travel farther and can do alot more damage also the f-18 has somthing the f-4 doesent have which is a gun on the nose of the plane and plus the f-4 doesent have a good turn radius

The F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet can make turns that would rip the wings off of a Phantom. Game over before it starts.

The only probable scenario for the F-4 to come on top would be an ambush (probably when the F/A-18 was on ground!!!).
The Phantom outperforms the Hornet only in top speed and everywhere else, the old warrior meets one of the meanest fighting machines ever built. It will be a triumph of a generation (and a half!) of avionics, aerodynamics, strategies and weaponry.
BTW you are also wrong about gun availability and missile counts.

um F/A - 18 hornet. F- 4 way out of date compared to the hornet. the missles on f-4 had some problems. no question asked, f4 wouldnt stand a chance. not at all.

The F/A-18 would win a dogfight if the pilots are evenly matched. The Air-to-Ait Radar on the 18 is better-more range, more targets, more weapons hand-offs. Thus the F/A-18 would see the F-4 could see the newer aircraft.
The F/A-18 would have first shot first kill.

The Phantom can outrun the Hornet but in a dogfight, the Hornet will be all over the Phantom. The Phantom isn't nicknamed the "Lead Sled" for nothing.
