I've heard that food in the military is awful...is that true, and is that true for all branches of the military?

This your question is a "myth' based upon actually "food technology" in the last century as well as transportation.

Army and USMC cooks are the best. The situation for the Navy and Air Force is a bit different but they also have some great places to dine.

In WWII, well fresh food was near impossible to procure: there was no means to get anything fresh to soldiers on ships or fighting in Europe or the Pacific.

That means: a great deal of canned food or dehydrated.

Think I read some of the Army calculated the cost of a meal in Iraq (a "mess hall" dining facility) at over $25 per person and if the actual air transport was added on over $50 per meal.

Facilities that serve students as in Boot, Basic or AIT are usually not the best. Some are better than others, military Hospital food can be the best. Although Army I have dined on a Navy nuclear submarine: unbelievable stuff: Had trout and a filet for lunch in the CPO's area.

Much of it being good is due to the professional food service personnel: many warrant officers and such as well as the enlisted really are trained.

The "problems" are standardized menus that well tastes great in
the winter at Fort Carson, Colorado is not what you want in Iraq when it is 140 degrees.

Besides the military has been working hard to get people to eat right and better not that the youth are all children of the "fast food" generations.

MRE's are a mistake and rather
low tech", but someday they will be upgraded:
after the war", freeze dried well between mulch and sawdust with added water equates a mixture that defies any chemical
science: man was not made to eat such.

The C rations I got in Vietnam were designed to feed troops in a "winter war" as in Korea or Europe. Also many soldiers had a bottle of Tobascco sauce as to make the stuff "come alive".

Beats what the other armies get I hear, think the Aussies have Kangaroo freeze dried stew? Who knows they also seems to have cabbage on many things/ But that was about 40 years ago.

I still on occasions dine at a Army dining facility. The Louis Richard Rocco facility at Fort Sam Houston is named for my best friend: great stuff!

Generally the food is quite good and varied. Even though I am ex-Air Force, my hat is off to the Navy - I think they have the best food. The only time the food is REALLY bad is when you are in training or in a forward-operating base where you must rely on MREs - and even some of those aren't half bad. Don't let the food scare you off!

Been all over the US and some bases overseas and the food varies so much, even by each branch. I've had great food and food I wouldnt serve my dog. Usually somewhere in between.

My husband is Air Force and he has always said the food is great. The dining facility at our base has a "family night" and we all go and everyone loves it. My husband is in Iraq right now and he is amazed by the food quality. he had lobster and King crab for dinner not too long ago.

My husband is in the Army and I have eaten at a couple of mess halls and one cafeteria on an Air Force Base. The places on the Army bases were really good. I did not like the one place that I ate at on an Air Force Base... but I suppose it varies base to base.

If you're in the military, I don't think food should be your biggest concern. Unless it's at boot camp when you burn so much fat, that you're almost always hungry, lol. I liked the lemon baked fish and the mashed potatoes and oatmeal.

they're not really that bad. the worst it gets are the MREs, (meals ready to eat). pretty much instant food. just add water... and eat. :P and even those aren't too horrible. i guess that's just because i've gotten used to them. hehe. only problem is it gets extremely repetitive. same thing day in and day out. but it's really not bad. sometimes i hear my boy calling me talking about him having to hang up because he smells steak and lobster... and he's deployed in iraq right now. lol. then you have the air force. where you pretty much get kick butt food on grounds with your military id. it's insane. :P

It's like any other restaurant in the fact that it is pretty good but not everywhere. Some of the best dining facilities i have eaten at have been army. I am AF and have eaten at many many dining facilities and have eaten MREs (meals ready to eat).
