If same-sex marriages are allowed, why should it stop there? Should a son be allowed to marry his mother? Should I be allowed to have 2 or more wives. Why not legalize incest, prostitution in all states, multiple spouses, suicide? Why should one group of people get differential treatment and not the other? Why not the right for any two or more consenting adults to do whatever they wish between each other? I feel this is the reason to not ask the first question.

No problem here. Not against nor for. Just a person with a question. Can you answer it? Or are you just going to complain?

Obviously the suicide bit is referring to those who have attempted and failed. Kudos to all the idiots that didn't get that one.....

Union between a man and a woman has never been a "gate" that needed opening in any society. And therefore does not apply to your argument levianty, but thanks for playing.

What about notions of incest where both participates (consenting adults) have been "fixed." Does your argument apply then?

First of all, incest is banned for a very good, sound, scientific reason: it makes deformed babies.

Suicide should be legal, of course. It's ridiculous that it isn't.

I don't see why there's any theoretical reason that multiple marriages shouldn't be allowed. As you say, anything consenting adults do that doesn't harm them or anyone else should be legal. There are certain practical problems to overcome - for instance, to ensure that they aren't a way to avoid inheritance tax, and how to resolve property rights and custody of children when they break down - but in theory I don't have any objection.

Prostitution all too often has a victim - many prostitutes are unwilling participants, or forced into it by economic circumstance - so that's a different case.

But as for same-sex marriage: what harm exactly does that do anyone else? and please, with "straight" divorce rates touching 50%, don't tell me that gay marriage is somehow a threat to a holy institution.

Wow what an idiot. But I feel you could make a point if you take your argument a step further.

Let's get rid of marriage altogether.

But if we don't do that, then let's try to be fair and offer marriage to all consenting adults where nobody will be harmed. Same-sex marriage should most definitely be allowed if different-sex marriage is.

Incest is somewhat tricky... The argument against it relates to the possible offspring. But marriage isn't about offspring. I really don't want to think rationally about such a topic, so will just skip over it...

Multiple wives. Definitely. If all are consenting and a woman can have multiple husbands.

Suicide has nothing to do with marriage. So no idea why you threw that in there. And although suicide is currently illegal, it's a pointless law!

I think you do hit the nail on the head with your final statement though:
"Why not the right for any two or more consenting adults to do whatever they wish between each other? I feel this is the reason to not ask the first question."

If the two or more consenting adults had those rights, then there would be no reason to ask your stupid question as it would already be answered.

One final point. I assume you're taking this from a religious position and that you're American. In the US, there is this great idea about keeping the Church and the State seperate. Just because your religion doesn't like same-sex marriages, this is no argument for not allowing them.

I met a same sex couple sometime back who had adopted 2 children. Very decent and educated people. They behaved very much like all other normal people. The only difference was that the kids were being brought up in an atmosphere that is very different from other families. They did not understand why there is a need of a father. For them kids with a father were odd. Here is where the problem lies I feel. That children brought up in such a marriage might start to feel that marriage between a man and woman is strange. Whether it is morally wrong is another issue.
There are millions who will say that a same-sex marriage is perfectly normal, but we know that it is not. There are problems if there are children involved, I am not saying that these problems cannot be overcome but children in such a marriage will have to make lots of mental adjustments.

You are comparing to lots of different things here.

Firstly, why on earth shouldn't there be same sex marriages? It's just as irrelevant as any other kind of marriage. And if 2 adults, or 3 or 4, or whatever number you like, are all (truly) consenting, then of course they should be allowed to do whatever they like.

Incest however, doesn't involve consent; it's about abuse of power, and is unacceptable.

Suicide, by the way, IS legal already, as it should be.

Prostitution would be legalised in any truly civilised society - it is always going to exist in one form or another; make it legal and save a lot of pain and abuse, not to mention making money for the country from taxes!

Yes - CONSENT is the word here. Where 2 or more people of equal power consent to an activity, then fair enough.

let's be rational here, not bigotted.

Wow. Homosexuals are not endangering unborn babies by having a relationship. Incest should not be legalized because it is potentially dangerous. If a son gets his mother pregnant, that baby will most likely have all kinds of physical and mental disorders out of the womb. Homosexual couples have been known to raise normal, society contributing, adopted children.

I could care less if you have two wives. That's not legal because we live in a Christian dominated country. If you want two wives, more power to you.

Prostitution is also illegal for health reasons. If you look at Las Vegas (where it's legal), they have so many health precautions it's silly. If it were to become federally legal, the government would need to drop a bunch of money into it in order to keep it safe. It's less expensive to keep it illegal. I don't see that changing either.

Suicide isn't illegal. How are you going to write a court order for someone who kills themselves? Idiot.

You don't have any good points. I'm not sure what your reason is against gay marriage.

To answer your question using the above reasoning, the only logical limitations (from what you listed) I can see based on safety reasons would be incestual marriages and prostitution. If it doesn't hurt anybody, it should be legal.

My policy is if whatever it is harms no one and involves consenting adults, it should be allowed. So given that, here's my answers to all the stuff you listed:

Incest: No. The child of such a union would be inbred, harming the child

Polygamy: If all parties agree, fine. Though I think if one spouse has multiple spouses, the other should be allowed the same. Just fair.

Prostitution: Should be legal. If it was regulated better, it would be less dangerous to the workers and STDs wouldn't be transported as often.

Suicide: I don't see how you can persecute someone for committing suicide anyway. They're dead already. :/

A lot of things you said goes beyond marriage. What does suicide have to do with marriage? How is two adults doing what they want between each other related to marriage?

But why limit it to heterosexual marriage? After all, since when did opening one gate mean all gates have to be opened? If going by logic "one gate is opened, so all should be opened", then why isn't all the gates already opened? After all, heterosexual marriage is a gate.

If heterosexual marriages are allowed, why should it stop there? Why should one group of people get different treatment and not another?

Isn't one of the main points of marriages to gain rights? How would the rights help between a mother and son?

Same sex marriages between 2 consenting adults should be allowed. Gay people that live as a couple should be given the same rights as straight people. Laws should be made to protect people from harm, Two consenting adults of the same sex are creating no harm to anyone.
To the homo-phobics that want to recite bible versus against gay people:
1. The bible was not originally written in Hebrew and Aramaic and has been translated, meanings can get lost in translation. Don't sit on your horse and recite versus to me unless you are well educated in Hebrew and Aramaic.
What about 'Judge not less you be judged' and
'He who has no sin may through the first stone!'
These verses seem to slip from the minds of the GAY HATERS that call themselves Christians.
2. Many verses are confusing and can mean different things to different people.
3. Separation of Church and State. There are no laws that should be based on the religion of the majority or any religion for that matter.

My parents taught me to be kind to everyone. I try very hard to live my life as a good person. I try to do the right thing in all situations. I am honest and giving! I do not judge people. Isn't that what Jesus wanted from us.

i'm able to purely assume that Paul S. Bullfighter is being sarcastic. human beings used to get married on the age of 11 or 12, or be gotten smaller in marriage even youthful (from time to time concerning what would probably would now be defined as pedophilia, as older adult adult males married a lot youthful girls folk). Marriage for romance is an exceedingly modern innovation on the concept. i ought to bypass on.

Well dufus for one

incest, rape etc hurts...

Gay sex does not.

Doing it with relatives makes deformed kids... gays sex does not.

It has f all to do with your notion of normal and wheter its genuinely harmful or not.

With animals you get nasty deseases being created.

In most cases two wives means one has little power and makes too many kids.

In some cases its ok say if the girls are bi sexual so no jealous... In most cases tyhe girls get hurt.

Prostituion... Actually in many countries its legal and well regulated ie over 18, girls muct have regular healht checks, get taxed, have employement rights, possible union, pimping illegal etc.. Girls much better off, clients too.

Examples ... www.fkk-oase.de

http://www.fkk-world.de/

In Thailand its legal in gogo bars. the girls are free agents and can choose and the hotels take the ids to protect both people.

Its the drugs and bullying pimps thats the problem...ie those who hurt
