Its not recommended to wait until after a heat cycle. Spaying at the 6-8 month age usually is perfect. They are old enough to minimize risks, and you won't interfere with the natural development of their personality. If a dog has a heat, they often change a bit in personality... and many times drastically. Spaying has more benefits that just controlling population... they have less chance of breast tumors, uterine abscessing, hormonal skin diseases, and they just make a nicer "pet".

It is better to get them spayed BEFORE they go in heat. The health benefits increase if done before a dog ever has a heat cycle.

It is best to spay a dog before it's first heat cycle. With every heat cycle comes the increased risk of an unwanted pregnancy, pyometra - infection in the uterus & the increase of mammary tumors - often malignant.

The decrease of a Mammary tumour reduces by 99.9% for a dog that is desexed before her first heat cycle. Plus it is messy and the dog bleeds everwhere so it is best to get it done at 6 months.

There are more health benefits to getting it done before she goes into heat. Spay her before her first heat this way you will not have to keep her confined and clean up blood for at least three weeks. It is messy.

It's a dominance thing. Also if the dog has learned that behavior pre-spay it isn't a fool proof. Just like male dogs can still mark territory and hump after neuter.

My vet's practice -- and what we've adhered to -- is:
6 months of age or first heat, whichever comes FIRST.
If you do NOT intend on breeding your female, spaying early is the best prevention for mammary cancer. Even one heat cycle can increase the risk depending on breed.

No. The vets I have gone to all say to catch her before she goes into heat. It is realy best to have her done at 5 months instead of 6 months.

Its a better idea to spay prior to first heat.
The chance of a female dog spayed prior to her first heat of getting mammory cancer is 0.05% however once she has had her first heat the likelyhood of mammory cancer goes up to 20%, why risk it!!!!
