The vet just told us that Oreo has a slight heart murmur. Any suggestions. I kind of zoned out when he mention heart issues and suggesting a $300+ MRI on my cat.

We found out as we were bringing Oreo in to get de-clawed (he kept drawing blood when he clawed us and we tried everything). Oreo's fine now after surgery but I'm worried about his heart.

Poor kitty, I am sorry I have no idea. I would have zoned out to from shock and worry.

I think you probably need to ask your vet more questions. How serious is the murmur, based on what he can hear? Is the MRI necessary? Is there a place where you can get it for less than $300 (although that's not a bad price for an MRI). Is it something that could be seen with a sonogram/echocardiogram instead?

If he really feels that an MRI is necessary, ask if there is a veterinary college near you that might take your cat as a patient; they often do procedures for a lot less than a veterinarian, and students are WELL-supervised.

Good luck, and I hope Oreo is better soon!

My cat also has a heart murmur, around 3 on a scale of 6 the vet said. They can live with it just fine, they might be more prone to early death however. My cat is also very aggressive, which could maybe have something to do with his heart problem..
I personally would say that a $300 MRI scan is unnecessary and just a way for the vet to make more money off you.
You could maybe try changing your cat's diet, i.e. making his food yourself from raw ingredients. I am going to start trying this with my kitty and see if it helps anything.

Iams makes a Kidney and heart diet with Taurine in it. My cat had a value that back flowed. BY THE WAY- she was almost 16 when she died. She was diabetic for 3 years and 1 month also. They can live with it. Walmart sells a cat vitamin that contains Taurine. It helps the kidney and heart function.

How old is your cat?My dog has a heart murmur and hes 11.The vet asured me that he can live a long healthy life as long as you don't over do his excerise.and keep him out of serious heat and cold. So, would not expect the vet to tell you to spend that kind of money unless is really really needed.Get a second opinion..
