They will hurt worse if your not prepared for it. Knowing what to expect is the best thing you can do in getting ready for them. So I'm going to send you this info a little early so you can be getting prepared for them. Read over it several times or print it out so you won't forget some of the tips. Good luck!
Congrats on your new braces! You are on a mission to obtaining a better smile not to mention having your teeth in perfect alignment! As for the pain, it's not uncommon for there to be a little pain because you have bands put on pushing teeth apart and strange wires and brackets all over the place. Your mouth is probably feeling pretty full right now. Do yourself a favor....don't push or rub on your lips, pushing against the brackets on your teeth can cause mouth ulcers and can be very painful. Use the wax the dentist gave you and eat soft foods today and tomorrow. Lots of ice cream, cold drinks or Popsicles! If your dentist prescribed Advil or Motrin for pain be sure to take it. Even today your teeth are on the move, but trust me, it does get easier and less painful after a few days. Every month you will be going back to see your dentist for adjustments. Sometimes it's a little uncomfortable for a day or so, but keep in mind how great your smile will be when it's all over! It will all be worth it in the long run. Some of my favorite patients are in ortho and it's always great to see their reactions when they finally get them off. It's usually one of hugs, kisses and Lots of looks in the mirror at their fantastic smile! Good luck! Let me know if I can help with anything else!
Most of the patients tell me the smoothies and ice cream are the best in reducing the pain, the cold numbs them, they use them at first and when adjusting is rough for them. I think they may just like the smoothies and ice cream myself! Also the Advil or Motrin will become your friend while your in ortho. Use the things that help you through it making it easier. There is no reason that orthodontic treatment should be painful when there are things that can ease, or even eliminate it. Hope this was helpful for you and good luck!

Well i just got my braces in last week. A week before you get your braces in, you get whats called spacers. These tiny little rubber bands lodged between your molars (4 teeth). A lot of people say that is most painful then the actual braces. Your teeth feel really sensitive because they are moving slightly from the rubber bands. You will have difficulty eating hard foods. Within a week the pain will go away and it will be time for your braces. Once you get your braces on, that night your teeth will hurt. Take any medicine your dentist prescribes or any kind of pain reliever is fine. Your teeth will hurt and be sensitive for about a week. My experience was overall okay. Its been about a week and my teeth hurt less and less as the days go by. There is a lot of discomfort because your not used to getting so much food stuck in your teeth, your mouth hurts because the metal starts to scratch into your inner mouth, but you will be used to it in time. Overall we all know the importance of straight teeth so its all worth it. No pain, no gain. Good luck and im excited for you in getting braces.

i had braces and what worked best for me was to take 2 extra strength tylenol just before you get to the orthodontist, then every 4-6 hours for the rest of the day. after that, take as needed according to directions. NEVER exceed what the directions say to take in a 24 hr period. my teeth ached the most for the first 48 hrs after getting the braces and then got better. ust the tylenol trick before each orthodontist visit to get a head start on the pain. make sure you tell the dr what you are taking to prevent any interactions that you may not be aware of

I had braces for four years. You get used to them. They hurt bad for about a week after he puts them on. Every month when you go get them tightened they'll hurt again, but only for a couple of days.
They get food stuck in them a lot, which is a bummer. The orthodontist will tell you all sorts of food you're not supposed to eat, but I ignored that advice and ate all the Tootsie Rolls I wanted. Just be sure to brush good or you'll get lots of cavities soon after they're taken off. I only got a couple way in the back.
I had to wear headgear, ugh, at least I only had to wear it at night. Now there's a retainer glued to the backs of my bottom teeth, and l wear another retainer on the top every night. My teeth are still straight, the braces were totally worth it! (but, of course, I wasn't paying for them)

Make sure you buy anbesol and some wax, which they might give you at the orthodontist. I wouldn't say it was painful, but more uncomfortable like a nagging headache. Anbesol helps to numb the area and keep you from feeling the pain. Try not to take too much pain killer because it isn't good for you.
make sure at the end you always keep your retainers and wear them because your teeth will go back like mine did!
