i was just wondering what is considered a fever in an 18 month old. i know when he was under a year anything over a hundred was something to be concerned about but he has been feeling really hot and has a really bad runny nose and when i took his temp two times today it was 99.7. he is sleeping alot more today too. should i be concerned or let it go for now and see what happens.

I would be more worried about the extra sleeping than the fever. It could just be a virus making him tired. But when in doubt, it never hurts to call the doctor. Or you could check in the phone book and on your insurance company's website for an "ask-a-nurse" line. They are usually 24 hours and you can call and speak to a nurse about whatever you are concerned about. Don't let it go; remember, you won't regret finding out everything is fine, but you will definitely regret waiting too long when you should have gotten him help! Here's a call a nurse line right here: http://www.urhcs.org/callanurse.php?page=callanurse It doesn't say, though, if you need to be in the area or have specific insurance. Just an example.

I am a doctor or nurse this is just what I have been told
It is not so much the temp itself but how they are acting. There would be more of a concern for child with a low grade fever like yours that is acting lethargic then a child with a higher temp like 101 that is running around laughing and playing. Now I know there is a point where a temp can cause seizures and I don't know what that is. My oldest son would get really high temps when he had ear infections. The highest was 106 luckily we were already at the hospital when this happened.
If you are concerned call your child's doctor. They can tell you if he needs to be seen or not.

For the symptoms you described and his age, I would guess that his fever is probably related to the runny nose that he has. How long has he had a runny nose? He could also have a mild case of an ear infection if his nose has been running for over a week. If his fever continues, even at a low grade, it would be best to call your pediatrician and have her/him look at him.

Sounds like he has a virus. Try alternating Tylenol and Motrin/Advil every 3 hours. For example Tylenol at 9, Motrin at 12, Tylenol at 3, Motrin at 6, Tylenol at 9 etc. My second daughter was sick a lot as an infant. We made many trips to the ER where all they would tell me to do was this, encourage fluids, keep her dressed lightly and give her cool baths. Not much else they can do for a virus, but getting her checked by her doc in the morning is a good idea to make sure she does not need an antibiotic for an ear infection or something.

I was taught that (with a baby) that a low gread temp is actually a good thing, fighting whatever infection or "bug" might be in there.. my perdiatrician told me not to medicate a fever till it was over 100.

Give him some Children's Motrin. It works best on fevers. He may have the flu or a cold. If the fever does not go down with Motrin, take him to a Dr.

I would just give the doctor a call. Maybe you should just give him some cold medicine. My docotr always tells me to call if it goes above 101. But since your son has been so sickly, they may want to check him out.
