It depends on the kind of shooting you want to do. If you are interested in traditional shooting, and not worried about accuracy as much or want to be an oldtime shooter then I'd suggest the recurve. These bows are smaller than a long bow so if you want to hunt, then they will be easier to carry in the forest than a long bow. With a recurve you can shoot traditionally as archers have done for centuries but you will loose accuracy. Not to say you can't be accurate with a recurve but the accuracy is reduced compared to a compound bow. With a recurve you are always pulling full draw weight which is fine but this will interfere with your accuracy if held long enough.

Now if your interested in higher accuracy, less draw weight and faster arrows speeds then a compound bow is the way to go. Compound bows are much more accurate than recurves as they have let off so that when you are pulling 50lbs and let off is 80% your only holding 20% of the 50lbs allowing you to take more time to aim increasing your accuracy. With today's technology in compound bows the arrow speed has increased dramatically with the use of alumium or carbon arrows, better cam set ups which up the arrow speed without having to up the poundage.

I shoot with a compound bow because I want increased accuracy, higher arrow speed and there is less that can go wrong with the flight pattern when using a compound bow with all the bells and whistles. I also hunt with this bow so I wanted an acurate bow that would be reliable and easy to carry in the forest.

Being strong has nothing to do with being about to shoot a bow. My bow is set at 45 - 50lbs and its a solo cam compound and its faster than and old browning compound bow with just wheels that has 80lbs. Having higher poundage doesn't really give you that might advantage as one might think. There will be more hitting power but a 500grain arrow flying at 300fps will have just as good penitration at 45lbs as 80lbs but your straining less at 45.

I have seen guys who think they are macho pulling 80 pounds and they are straining to pull these bows and with little effort at 50lbs I can pull mine more often shooting more arrows with better accuracy.

So in closing it depends what kind of shooting you want to do, if your want to me a sniper with a bow, and want fast reliable shots I'd go with a Solo cam compound bow. A good brand is Darton but you should go to a pro shop and get set up test a few bows and see what you like

I hope this helps.

Compound will allows you to work with more draw weight.
For example lets say 50 pound compound with a 40% let off would be 30 pounds hold at full draw.
Where as a 50 pound recurve is not as easy to shoot and at dull draw you are holding all 50 pounds.
If it’s for hunting you may have to hold at full draw for a while, and let the deer get back in position, I have had them turn away from me just as I went to full draw and had to hold for 1 to 3 minutes before they rolled back for a good shot.
The compound also gives you a faster arrow speed.

I would say Compound all the way. Especially for a new bow hunter or shooter

Recurve. Or Long Bow if you want to be really cool. No compounds for me. I don't need training wheels.

Recurve or take down recurve trust me.Compounds are harder
to pull but, recuves better for start out. When you get advances then get a compound.

Compound all the way. Easier to aim and keep drawn when necessary!

For a woman I recommend a crossbow if your state allows it.
