A healthy dog's eyes will naturally self-clean. If your dogs' eyes are dry, your vet can prescribe a gel or some drops to help.
I use a supplement in my dogs' food to get rid of the little bit of eye goop that they might have - this is it:

make sure that you cut the hair by the corners of his eyes. that will help the eye boogers and the staining around the eyes. otherwise use a clean, warm washcloth
