It depends on the part of the word/which country you are in.

You ascend the stairs on the same side as you drive. If you drive on the right side of the street, you ascend the right side of the stairs, and vice versa. That is, if you want to be polite and follow etiquette.

I learned this the hard way when visiting South Africa and started bumping into people. :o)

It is determined by which side of the road the cars drive on in a particular country. Just watch. Go to England, Japan, Singapore, Australia-they will always pass (while walking) to the left.

The same rule for driving your car applies to almost every situation... walking, etc.

You travel on the right hand side while the other people are on your left side.

Depends where you are. In the US it's the right (pass on the left). While I was in Japan, in the big cities it was on the left, smaller cities on the right.

I think it depends if you are in the U.S. or in Europe, in Europe i think they go up on the left side of the stairs, we yanks here in the U.S. go up on the right side of the stairs.

On the subway you stand to the right if you are standing still on the esca;ator. so people can walk up on the left.
