My Child has SID and ADHD and could be borderline Autistic. We're having major problems trying to potty train him. He's five almost six and cannot get him to go on his own. We have to tell him to go to the potty and then he will go. But he still moves his bowels in his pants. He has a sensitivity problem and I want to know what to do

My 7 year old son is a high-functioning autistic child, and potty training was not complete until age 6.It is extremely difficult. With him,the peer pressure of seeing the other children who were fully potty trained at school helped quite a lot. Also, positive reinforcement each and every time that he went in the toilet was vitally important. He has children in his special-needs class that are 9 and 10 and still wearing pull-ups.My son is mainstreamed 4 afternoons a week, and that is the best thing for him.Good luck.

Have him watch other males in the family go on the potty. After that person is done make a comment as to how easy it was and nothing bad has happened. Many children resist because they think they are loosing a good part of themselves. When he does go praise him.
I have a retarded son with autistic traits, but he had brothers he could watch and he did not like being wet or messy so it was fairly easy for me.
Good luck and hope this helps.

I understand how you feel. My 9 yr old daughter is autistic. She became fully potty trained at age 7. I honestly think that my younger daughter helped the most. When my oldest saw her being toilet trained, everything seemed to click. Try writing down when he has bowel movements. My daughter was fairly regular. When you see a pattern, be sure to send him to the bathroom during that time. After a few successes, she got the idea. For about 7 months we had to remind her to go. After that she did it on her own. We have been accident free for about a year. Good luck to you.

Try looking on Babycenter.com they offer awsome advice, I worked in a daycare for a while with autistic children and we actully used a point system for some of the more able children and stickers, Have you tried putting cereal in the towlet and have him aim to sink them make it a game, Give him a prize when he does good, maybe a snack or have a special toy he only gets to play with when he goes to the potty on his own, help him help you understand why he wont go, It could also be a fear, Check out the site I gave you for more help and insight on it, i hope I could help and good luck.

Try the reward system. Also, since he is a special needs child be very patient with him. Use wipe that he picked out himself. This will make it more fun and exciting about using the potty. When he does go to the potty, show lots of excitement!

My son is Autistic and potty training was impossible. But at the age of 5 with no training or advice ,he just decided to use the toilet on his own. We think the idea might have been generated by him watching other kids his age. IE. kids at his school and/or daycare. Try it somehow It might work.

I wish i had the magic answer for you (for BOTH of us). I am the parent of a 9 y.o. autistic female and she lacks the verbal skills to tell us when and the skills to undress herself to do it...We know that when we do place her on the potty and she goes that we just "caught" her at the right time...she is not learning an association and probably never will. I wish I could help you but good luck anyway...
