Hybrid- NO, according to cnnmoney.com and consumer reports it takes 13 years to get back the extra money you pay for hybrid. They also depreciate faster(not by percentage, but because they cost so much more) A prius does not get the 60mpg as advertised. I would recommend a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. Diesels cars will be the way of the future. Honda who has never had a diesel, will start making diesels next year. Actually Hydrogen will be the long time future. BMW,GM and few other companies are now starting to make hydrogen vehicles.

It depends where you live and your driving habits. I would go with a diesel. Diesels last a long time and you can always use a combination of bio-diesel and regular diesel. With the price of oil now gas is cheaper, but that won't last forever. Bio-diesel is better on the environment, they are less expensive than hybrids and easier to maintain.

If you drive primarily in town, I would lean toward the Prius. If you drive highway, I would look for a VW Jetta diesel (they get in the upper 40's highway). If you drive a mix but dont put on a lot of miles, a Toyota carolla or matrix or a Honda civic.
