I am 21 years old and do not have what I would consider severe acne, probably moderate, but with recurrent cysts (1 per week or every other week). I began Claravis (a form of Accutane or Isotretinoin) four days ago with 20mg per day. The insert of the package says that the patient may experience an initial acne flare during the first few days of treatment. Thus far, I have seen a slight increase (maybe 4 or 5 marks), but nothing terrible. Should the flare-up of acne increase significantly from what I am getting now? If so, how long until the full flare-up occurs since the package says "during the first few days". With only taking 20mg per day as opposed to 40 or 80, will it not be as bad? Anyone's insight with experience with this drug at this mg level is much appreciated. Only those with actual helpful information need comment. Thanks!

I hear you, I just got out of this boat! When I initially started, I was on 20 mg for 2 weeks then 40mg for 2 weeks, After that I went from 60 mg for 3 months and ended 70 mg for 1 month. Totalling 5 months. People said they could see a difference at 3 months, however, since I see myself everyday and am my own worst critic, I didnt see it until 4 months. The flare up is just at the beginning and, if any, should last no more than a month. The "flare up" is just inflammation from the medication drying you out, your body will adjust. Expect to have dry, flaky skin and chapped lips! MOISTURIZE constantly! The only problem I have now that I am off is the redness left from the cyctic acne. I am now on Retin A Micro to take care of that. Honestly, I had tried everything before Accutane and was really getting my hopes up to expect a miracle. Dont. It definitely got rid of the acne, but very slowly. And like I said, now I just have to get rid of some scarring. Also, keep an eye on your attitude (you know about the depression). I didnt get 'depressed', but I got some effects of depression like being tired alot. I hope everything works out for you!

How should I take Accutane?

Take Accutane exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
Each prescription of Accutane must be filled within 7 days of the date it was prescribed by your doctor. You will receive no more than a 30-day supply of Accutane at one time.
Always take Accutane with a full glass of water to prevent the capsule from melting in your esophagus (food pipe), causing irritation. Do not chew or suck on the capsule. Swallow it as quickly as possible. Take Accutane with food or milk. Take this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your acne may seem to get worse at first, but should then begin to improve.
To be sure this medication is not causing harmful effects, your blood may need to be tested often. Your liver function may also need to be tested. Visit your doctor regularly.
Never share this medicine with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have. Store Accutane at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.
