Is there such a thing as a "free download" for microsoft office?

Not quite Microsoft Office but there are other free Office solutions compatible with it (not fully compatible though!). try OpenOffice:

If you go with open office you'll be satisfied
If you're not anal and value a Free Program
give it a shot if you don't like it then bite the bullet and pay the money for Microsoft office

With Vista coming out and Office 2007 to follow
you may want to get a older version but that will still put a hole in your bank account

Not legally no. There are free trial versions of some of the individual bits of MSOffice, but these only last for a limited amount of time before they stop working. After that you need to buy the full version to keep using them.

no, but you can use openoffice.org, that is free and just as nice or nicer than microsoft products.
