The Bible shows that there is a proper fear and an improper fear. Thus, fear may be wholesome and cause the individual to proceed with due caution in the face of danger, thereby averting disaster, or it may be morbid, destroying hope and weakening a person’s nervous stamina, even to the point of bringing about death. The fear of God is healthful; it is an awe and a profound reverence for the Creator and a wholesome dread of displeasing him. This fear of incurring his displeasure is a result of appreciation of his loving-kindness and goodness together with the realization that he is the Supreme Judge and the Almighty, who has the power to inflict punishment or death upon those who disobey him.

The Bible says that fearing God is the beginning of wisdom. Truely Satan is fearful of God, due to the fact that Satan and his angels know first hand what, what the God of creation can do. Something humans have no understanding of. If humans knew as Satans does what God can do. Humans would not be so fast to speak agianst him. The only reason, humans get away with their hate toward God, is becasue Jesus is gone right now. But Jesus is coming back, and when he gets back, then we all shall see, who is so brave that they will confront him to face to face.

Well, this is my understanding...its not so much that you are supposed to "fear" God per se and walk around paranoid all the time, but the person who does fear shows faith. Take the legal system for example...most decent people who obey the law do so because they are afraid of being arrested, incarcerated, etc...so in effect they "fear" the law, but they are not afraid of the police, judges or lawmakers themselves because they have committed no crime. 'Criminals' on the other hand, don't fear the law, so they wind up doing all kinds of bad stuff. The one who fears is the one who shows genuine respect is the best way to put it I guess. Although maybe "fear" wasn't the best choice of words IMHO.

Yes, so that we know His power. It is only by His will that we breathe everyday. We are allowed to live because of him... He wants to see what we are worth of. Like a parent or boss...It is supposed to be a healthy fear out of respect for His authority.
Exodus 20:20
Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning."

Yes you should fear God. To Fear the Lord to recognize that He is Holy, he is All-Powerful, and all knowning.
This fear (respect is a decent replacement, but don't soften it too much) will lead you to live a better life because you fear there is consequences for your behavior.

The fear of God is the beginning of Wisdom.
Jer 5:22 (NIV) "Should you not fear me?" declares the Lord. "Should you not tremble in my presence?"
In Hebrew, yirah (Jon 1:16, Ps 90:11), yare (above, Mal 3:16) and pachad (Job 3:25a, Ps 119:120) mean reverent fear, terror, or dread, normally translated simply fear. There are other words in Hebrew for mere respect, reverence, or honor, such as kabad (Ex 20:12). In Greek fear/terror is phobo (Mat 28:4,1 Pet 2:17c), where reverence or honor is timao (1 Pet 2:17a/d).

I am a catholic Christian, and I know I can speak for many we do not fear God or Christ, we respect and worship them but we do not fear them, to be a God fearing person is a man made statement not a God statement.

God prefers that we love Him.
But if that does not motivate us, then we should fear Him (most of the time fear means reverence, but it can also be dread). Jesus said in Luke 12:5
But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
Man can only kill the body, but God on the Judgment day will cast sinful men into the lake of fire.

Here's my view on it. I hope it helps.
God is the creator of everything - the universe - the planets - people - down to every atom in the creation. God is unbelievably powerful and awesome.
A way to explain it is like how children (in a healthy home) are afraid of their fathers. I have two sons, and I would give my life for them, but when I discipline them, they are afraid of me. So with authority comes an element of fear.
Does that make sense?

Take away Jesus for a second. G-d is to be feared because we would burn in His court of Judgement. He demands only perfection, so we would be screwed. Bible says those who fear G-d hate evil. We respect Him. We love what He loves (Jesus, repentance, love and Jews) and hate what He hates (sin).
Now put Jesus back in. He is our best buddy! He makes us righteous, perfect and pleasing to G-d. Yaaaaa Jesus!
Bless you
