This is only the start of your problems. You might recover the system but it will crash again soon. Here's the best fix:
Get another hard drive. Remove the old one, stick in the new one. Start a clean install.
After you got it up and running, install the second hard drive and pull your files across.
After you've got all your files, wipe your original hard drive and use it to store files only (no programs). Then create a backup of your c: (programs) drive and save it on your second drive. Next time it happens you can use the backup to put everything back as it should be, and your files will remain intact on the other drive.

It sounds like a lot of work, but you only have to do it once and it saves a lot of hardship when something like this happens again (and it WILL!) Good luck!

If it's an xp or 98se, try pressing f8 when windows starts to load. This will take you to advanced options menu. If it's xp you could try last known good. If not choose safe mode and try to load the file from a windows disc. That file is one of the operating system files, and needs to be reloaded. Chances are good a virus knocked it out.

Try doing a restore. If this just recently happened, there's a good chance that the restore function will work.

Start/Program/Accessories/System Tools/Restore
