i don't think that birds should be pets, they fly, let them feel the freedom that they were born to have, their wings spread wide in the sky breathing deeply, and looking down upon the world.

Safety.
I would love it if my birds could fly free-range around the house, but for their safety, they can't. There are too many things in a human household that can and will injure any and all animals, and it's not worth the risk. I don't mind cleaning the poop when my birds are isolated in a single room, but with the wires for electricity, the windows to hit, the blinds to cut, the gaps and crevices to get stuck inside, it's very dangerous.
If birds never were domesticated into pets, I would be fine with watching them fly free in their natural habitat, but they are pets and the pets we have now are so accustomed to living in domestic homes, we'd never be able to set them free or let them be free-flying.
Have you considered that people have large aviaries that are many square feet huge, huge enough to allow a significantly larger flying space? Besides, caging doesn't mean they have any limited flying. Any good bird owner would buy a cage that their bird can fly around in any direction. Also, good bird owners let their birds out of the cage to fly around under proper supervision to avoid accidents multiple times a day for hours on end. I spend my summers with my birds outside of their cages until their bedtime.

My Military Macaw, Rio uses his cage as his bedroom (and it's damn near big enough that it could be MY bedroom). It's his safety net, it's his kitchen. It's his play room. It's where he hides his treats. It's where he can go if we're getting on his nerves.
Rio goes everywhere with me, and loves me as much as I love him.
What Rio doesn't appreciate is people outside of our household that try to make decisions for him, like that he should be wild, or that he shouldn't have ever gotten the chance to come live with us. He thinks PETA is a sham, and he thinks that if people really knew him, they would know that he likes his cage. That he likes living with us, because he gets everything he needs, everything he wants and he can do what he wants.
Rio thinks that the people who don't think that birds should be pets, shouldn't have birds as pets, and leave the rest of the bird population alone.
And, Rio thinks that this is a really dumb question, and wonders why you live in a house.

my birds only use their cages at night. This is to keep them from hurting themselves if something frightens them! My birds tend to go in and out throughout the day. It is a safe haven where they can go to get away from everything. Also, My African Grey and Red Front Macaw do not have wings clipped but prefer to WALK to the couch instead of flying!!!

Hi there. Being disabled, my bedroom is my prison and my bird and I have a great relationship. He's allowed out of his cage everyday. He helps me and I help him. They are more intelligent than once thought and he isn't just an ornament to me. He picks up small items I sometimes drop and returns them to me. His cage is his room for privacy and eating. and elimination..Since the sale of birds is not going to stop, I figure it would be best to give my bird the best life possible. I do appreciate your point of view. Thanks for posting.

My pet parakeet was alowed to fly around inside the house all day, and when she would tire she would fly to her cage to eat drink or rest, and then one day she accidently got outside and was immediatly attacked by a large wild bird. I would say the cage was for her protection and safety!!

I don't have my birds in the cage.
I'll be moving soon so I will have to lock them up.
But instead of keeping them in their cage all the time..
You can let them out once a week.
