So many things. He was a scientist, architect, weapons designer, a painter and a sculptor. As a scientist he was so far ahead of his time, it wasn't even funny. He designed a glider that could actually fly. It was never built for fear of the Catholic Church and its Inquisition (if man was meant to fly, God would have given him wings, right?) But in 1969, a group of engineering students at Cal-Tech built a glider to old Leonardo's specs, and it flew! Nevertheless, Leonardo is most famous for his painting the Mona Lisa. People who don't know anything about art, or anything about him for that matter, know he painted that picture. It's a cultural icon second to none!

One of da Vinci's great contributions was the development of an artistic technique called sfumato. It is a method for giving painted faces life like depth which is why the Mona Lisa was ahead of its time.
