I've had same problem. Baking soda just doesn't work for really tough odors and certainly doesn't last very long if it does. I strongly recommend a product called FRIDGE-IT carbon odor absorber. This great little purple cube has an activated carbon filter inside and wow, does it ever work to eliminate odors.
Just put on on any shelf in your refrigerator and even in freezer. I've really had good luck with this product and recommend it to alll my friends. You can find it on the web but also at walmart and some other stores like linens and things. Try it.

Hi Shelley,

you need to wash the whole fridge out with warm soapy water take particular care with the rubber seals around the doors ad take all shelves and drawers out of the fridge and make sure you use a little brush to get right into all of the ridges in the fridge.

Be sure to move the fridge away from the wall and clean the wall and floor behind and under it and check that there isn't a dead rodent in the motor area of the fridge too!!! (All the scrubbing in the world wont rid you of a smell if the cause is not actually inside the fridge)

after washing the fridge out with the warm soapy water you can wipe it out with a strong bleach solution and leave open to air overnight.

After that wipe the whole inside with vanilla extract, (vanilla essence does work but the extract is stronger)

Then place two small bowls in the fridge full of bicarbonate soda. Close the doors and leave the fridge running overnight.

if that doesnt work I suggest throwing away the fridge and getting a new one....

Try wiping it with vinegar. Also pull out the drip pan under the refrigerater. That may be where the smell is coming from. Just dump it (outside!) and clean it really well with some bleach water.

Have you tried looking under the refrigerator? Maybe there is a dead mouse or something. You might want to have a refrigeration technician look at it also.
