an idol can be a CAR, a CAREER, MONEY, a secret DESIRE, a false RELIGION, a sense of PROUD, thinking that you can EARN your right to go to Heaven...I think you got the idea...

The better understanding of an idol is this: Anything you put before God is an Idol. Anything you want, that you are willing to sin to get, is an idol. Example: If you want a new job really bad, and you lie on your application to get it...That job has become an idol, because instead of trusting God to meet your needs (whether that be, give you this job or not!) You took it into your hands, basically saying I know what is better for me than God does! That is an idol, it can be anything & everything. We ALL, even Christians have idols, now & again. I think that question is not fair... The truth is we ALL have idols, The question should be; do you know you have them & what they are? And what are you going to do about that?

No an idol is something you worship, ask favors from and hope you can have some sort of relationship with. You pastor may be a bit of a goof or you may have misunderstood. What is wrong with doing a good job at your work or enjoying your car? You can maintain a good relationship with God and still enjoy the things you have in your life. If you spend a lot of time with your family and thinking about them, is your family an idol?

Since man (self?) can be as a 'god' (Gen.3:5-6), I suspect we all should 'watch' ourselves for idolatry in this life.
