There is no such breed as a Chinese Imperial dog. People may do a "sales pitch" and call certain dogs a name like that. I have heard of small Pekingese called "Imperial Pekingese"....also Standard (large) Poodles called "Royal Poodles". It's what I call a "street name".

It is a genetically screwed up dwarf version of a Shih Tzu.
Don't buy one!!!
They are not quality bred dogs and they have a multitude of health problems. This is not a different breed of Shih Tzu and they are bred by liars and crooks wanting to take your money!
Look at this site to research the true Shih Tzu dog.

Here is a link for the Chinese Imperial Dog Club site. You can read the Breed Standard and learn more about the breed.
Please ignore people's answers that state its not a breed. AKC has many breeds that are pending for recognition and other breeds are still being preserved for quality so they can be considered. Most people are so worried about the designer dogs like snorkies and labradoodles that they are not willing to reasearch and find the proper information.
This breed is probably recognized by the international kennel clubs and is recognized by the International Progressive Breed Alliance which is kind of like the Rare Breed Club in the U.S.
If you would like to see other rare dog breeds that are legitimate breeds being preserved check out the last link. The blue highlighted breeds show some pics and characteristics info.

a Chinese Imperial is what bad breeders are calling small Shih Tzu.
In reality, there is no such breed, and any dog called that is simply the result of poor breeding practices and is liable to have a myriad of health problems!
