Isn't there something else that could be done with the money spent on such lavish churches that would be more helpful to people? Isn't that what religion is all about, helping people who can't help themselves? Couldn't "God" be worshipped just as well in more meager settings?

I agree. God does not want temples made of iron and stone filled with fine art and precious metals. It is said that he wants us to worship him anywhere and not in buildings made of wood and stone. "Split a piece of wood and I am there, lift a stone and you will find me." God is everywhere and not just in buildings made of wood and stone.

Yes, God can most certainly be worshipped in the humblest of settings.

Not all churches are ornate. Many of them that are have been that way for years; the artwork etc has already been paid for. Others are the result of people donating money specifically FOR something like a statue or a section of stained glass. Legally, financial gifts like those must be used for the purposes specified.

Have you ever been involved in a church? If not, how can you know or say whether people are helped inside or not. I know the churches I have attended have helped many people in many ways from feeding and clothing them to visiting and comforting and praying for them.

God is and can be worshipped in many meager settings. The last church I belonged to was a huge gymnasium which people volunteered many hours painting and fixing up. The "beauty touches" are ususally donated by various members. It is our Sunday home. Peace :-)

The art of architecture is an expression of worship, just as music and painting are. The cathedrals of Europe took decades to build and were expressions of worship that have lasted for centuries. Matthew 26:11-For you have the poor with you always-

Normally churches vote on what will be done with the money given to the church. If you'd like a say, become a member and vote.

A certain amount of money does have to be spent for the upkeep of churches. Otherwise the buildings would fall down.

The Catholic Church does donate to those who are less fortunate. I know for a fact that our parish does.

Churches are enamored with themselves. And they make so much money that they don't know what to do with it. And somehow, giving to the poor unfed masses doesn't look as stylish as a nice new Sanctuary or Fellowship Hall.

Byzantine Catholics and most Orthodox churches do the churches up to "create" a "vision" of "paradise" to come... a sort of meditative tool to shock and awe the parishoner.
