Im scheduled for a tonsillectomy in about 2.5 weeks. I was just wondering about the weight loss that comes with it. Ive heard some people say they lost between 10-15 pounds (most of it probably water weight) but for anyone who has had a tonsillectomy did you lose wieght? How much? Did it come right back as soon as you began eating normally again? What are some problems that you experienced after the surgery? Thanks!

1st don't worry about it, it's not bad at all. Ur going to experience a sore throat & not eating good solid food for a couple of weeks. U lose more than water weight. You will loose body weight too. My weight came back because I was trying to gain weight. I lost 15 lbs. If U want to loose more weight this is a a good time. Ur stomach will have shrunk, so u could take advantage of this by not eating as much. If U want the weight back eat enough to gain it back. I had no problem with this surgery at all. Hope this helps U or puts Ur mind at ease.

The only reason that someone loses weight after a tonsillectomy is because they are usually on liquids or soft foods for about a week. My daughter lost five pounds but gained it back after returning to eat normally.

Hi I wouldent worry to much ! its isnt all that bad.. i had mine out about 4 years ago or so ... i did lose quite a bit of weight because i could barley even drink liquids... for example ice cream was really hard for me to swallow... i pretty much ate chicken noodle soup the whole time... but then again you dont really have an appitite u just wanna sleep. I lost about 15-20 lbs but i gained it back as soon as i started eating again drink water and take it easy u'll be okay!

Mine removed at 13yrs... may have lost 1-2 kg but I was back to normal diet after just a few days. If you are really concerned just increase your caloric intake (maybe something like "Sustagen" as you can use it in drinks).
I didn't experience any problems after the surgery but I was warned by a friend, and please don't freak out at this point, that afterwards you should not be swallowing/coughing up blood. She did because the wound wasn't sealed properly. Happens in very small % of people who have them removed.
Am sure you will be fine - don't freak out & all the best!
