is swearing a sin? and what makes it a "swear" word?

like for instance, i know some people that get annoyed when people say "dangint" and "darnit" because those are swear words to them, but to others they arent. what is the criteria for a word to be considered a swear word?

furthermore where in the bible does it say not to swear?

If it offends somebody and honestly hurts their feelings, and society largely agrees it is offensive, then I suppose that meets the criteria for a swear word.

Nope. Not a sin. Nowhere in the Bible. In fact the words people consider "swear words" today didn't even exist at the time the bible was written......and words were considered offensive then that people don't find offensive at all anymore.

And people who consider "swear words" to be offensive are sheep. They think they are offensive because they're told they are offensive and then they choose to take them in that manner.

They're only words.

I'm not sure where in the Bible it says not to swear, but I know that the Bible says not to let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth. In otherwords, only say things that will be benificial to others, not things that will tear them down. Cussing at someone can be emotionally stressful to them, so in God's eyes, cussing is unwholesome talk, since it doesn't build others up.

I know that there are verses that deal with this in Proverbs, but I'm not sure where in Proverbs.

I only swear when I'm angry. I do consider it a sin but we're not perfect. At least I don't say the Lord's name in vain.

I remember when my dad got mad because I said "this sucks". I think it also depends on the age of the person you are talking to or around.
