Real stonemasons established an exclusive trade association back in the Middle Ages primarily to protect their jobs. They insisted that stonecutters and bricklayers be trained and experienced, and to ensure that, they made their trade association secret and came up with a number of ways a mason could make his talents known to other masons, such as a secret handshake. The organization has changed and grown over the centuries, often being a mark of the gentry as well as that of a master crafts trade. George Washington was a Mason, as was Robert E. Lee and a great many other especially noteworthy Americans.

The first Grand Lodge formed in Freemasonry was The Grand Lodge of England (GLE), founded in 1717, when four existing London Lodges met for a joint dinner. This rapidly expanded into a regulatory body, which almost all English Lodges joined. From the 1750s onwards, two competing English Grand Lodges vied for supremacy - the "Moderns" (GLE) and "Ancients" (sometimes spelled "Antients") Grand Lodges. They finally united in 1813 to form the present United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE).
