Well, "The Joy of Cooking" is the quintessential classic.

Better Homes & Gardens makes some decent cookbooks.

If you want something fun that explains various cooking methods (in addition to supplying recipes), check out "I'm Just Here for the Food" by Alton Brown.

Any of these can be found at a bookstore like Barnes & Noble or Borders.

Choosing a cookbook is all about personal preference and how detailed you want to get. If you are just starting out I recommend that you try the Joy of Cooking or Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. I like BH&G because it has simple clear cut instruxtions as well as photos. You can pick up these at discount bookstores, or even on line in eBay.

The America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook
by Cook's Illustrated, Carl Tremblay (Photographer), Daniel J. Ackere (Photographer)
Reliable recipes, good illustrations and explanations, product recommendations.

The Joy of Cooking (any edition - used is okay)
This is a great basic cookbook & any edition will be a handy reference/introduction to the basics.

How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman
An excellent, comprehensive cookbook with simple but tasty recipes.

These are my top 3 recommendations. You can buy them online or almost any book store.

Betty Crocker cookbook. I have mine for over 50 years and use is often. There have been several revisions over the years and one in 2006/07. I still favor the 1950 or so issue. Can be purchased in any book store or get it from the library.

Marie Claire Comfort
Michele Cranston
Like Martha Stewart, Ina Garten, and Sara Foster, Australian Michele Cranston has a talent for re-inventing the familiar. As in her other books (Zest, Luscious, et al $29.95) Cranston is particularly inventive with vegetables whether in salads or side dishes. An orange soda bread with mixed seeds is another must-sample. Colour photos. Softcover 224 pp $29.95.

Right now I am totally loving "Saving Dinner the Low Carb Way" by Leanne Ely.
Easy, delicious and healthy recipes, shopping lists, plus add on suggestions for those in your family who might not care about carbs.
You should be able to get this anywhere online or through her website (listed in sources).
