Chevy Colorado & Ford Ranger - avoid. Too weak to do any good, if you say you don't need to tow/haul that much, why are you getting a truck in the 1st place - get an suv instead.
Dodge Ram - only if gonna keep it 3 years or less. Bad reliability - notice how Dodge always touts winning awards for "Initial quality." Yeah, but when a crankshaft comes through the dash at 70,000 miles, not so much.
F-150 / Silverado - pretty comparable, both cost more than Dodge, but are better trucks. F-150 if you are making long drives/commute because the interior is nicer and better laid out. Silverado if want to last a long time, not as concerned with looks.

The Colorado and Ranger are compact trucks which is a different class from the F-150, Silverado and Ram which are full size. So, unless you sincerely need a full size truck due to towing trailers, hauling a lot of weight in the bed or you need a crew cab to carry more than 2 or 3 people then you will save thousands on purchase price, gas and insurance by going with the colorado or ranger. I would go with the ranger any day of the week. I bought my 95 ranger xl with manual transmission and the 4cyl, used with 55K miles and drove until 165K miles when the clutch wore out and my wife was pregnant (and we needed a bigger car). During that time I never had any problems with it whatsoever. I only barely kept the fluid change intervals and replaced the apparently original battery at 140K miles. During the same time a friend bought a used colorado with 5K miles which ended up having sever engine problems which required a new engine and she had to sell it at a huge loss. Besides the ranger gives you more options for less money.

It depends on how much you want to spend in gas. I had a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi and I was getting aprox 12 city mi per gal. Now I have a 2006 Chevy Silverado 1500 with flex fuel and I get aprox 19 city mi per gal. Chevy or GMC will save you lots of money.

The difference between Ford and Chevrolet is on of styling and personal preference despite all of the hoopla about which is better they are so close in reliability that it comes down to which one YOU like the most. As far as the size, the bigger the truck, the bigger the bills for fuel, maintenance etc. The smaller trucks have their limitations. I started with a Ford Ranger, moved up to an Explorer Sport Trac, and then to an F350 Diesel. The Ranger was positively wimpy for load and towing capacity, the Sport Trac towed well, but the 4 foot bed was too limiting. My F350 4x4 long bed diesel does it all.

Buying new or used? In my opinion I would buy a Toyota, they are a prov en solid truck and they have come into the American market with trucks that can compete with the large 'Big 3'. My advise is to avoid the ford ranger, I have recently bought one and it has been nothing but problems. I should have taken my own advise.
