Why is it impossible to go see him? Finances? School? Work? Those things shouldn't be excuses to not see him. You should rearrange your schedule to see him before he dies.

Your father is your father is your father; do what he needs you to do. Nothing is "impossible".
My father also died from cancer. For months he found ways to talk me out of travelling home to see him, so I never did. When I finally saw him at his funeral, he didn't even look like my dad. It took me two years before I could really grieve for him. The whole experience was surreal.
Do whatever you need to do to be with your father; he deserves your best.

I think the right thing to do is, to go be with your father right now. Having relatives there, is not the same as having his first born son there. I'm sure it would make him very happy to see you there. Why is it impossible to go see him? I would drop everything, to be with my family when they need me.

Try to get the time or the funds to be there for him NOW and when he passes on. If anything I would want to see him before he passed on so he would know I was there. Funeral attendance is nothing but a showing and trivial if you ask me. BUT I would try to be there for both scenarios.

i really think you should do everything in your power to get there... i'm sure your employer would understand if its work stopping you... i think you will regret not seeing him before he goes... sorry for your loss... i know i dont understand but this is just my opinion.
