We're looking for a new family truckster, but are in no hurry. Model year leftovers are OK, and are one way to save some money on a new car, but any other thoughts on why/when/what time of year you can save money on a new car purchase?

You just said year end model left overs. They clear the floor for the new models.

I was friends with a woman whose family owned an oldsmobile dealership for 30 years. She says aside from the sales during the year usually the end of the year around december is the best because dealers have monthly and annual sales quotas which make them want to sell more cars at the end of the year. However, few people want to buys cars in December because the weather is bad outside and they don't want to stand around a cold lot and because they are too busy spending money on christmas presents to have much left over for a car. BTW the model years do not correspond to the calendar years so in December 2006 the dealers probably had mostly 2007 model year cars with a handful of leftover 2006 model year cars.

I own a used carlot and have worked as a salesman on the floor of a new car dealership before I got my own lot. Here is the deal! It has NOTHING TO DO with year end closeout anything.....like they want you to believe. Yes, cars go up every year, BUT.....they do not discount down the previous model years to clear them out. They automatically are cheaper than the new model year and that is how they clear them out. However, the months Oct-Dec are VERY slow months at a new car dealership because everyone has their mind on buying Christmas presents, not spending on themselves. The manufacturers know this and often start bumping up incentives (kickbacks) to the dealers. They do this mainly on the current model years as there are not nearly as many next year model years available. Here is what you do. Do your homework, find out when there is a good incentive. Go to the dealership in Oct or Nov on a RAINY saturday. (I say saturday because that is where all the salesman and managers get their Saturday bonuses and the fact that there is always big expectations on Saturdays......a rainy Sat blows everyone's numbers so they start cutting the prices to keep the numbers up.) Everyone (managers, salesmen, etc.) just wants to get a deal to feel better about themselves. You will be one of the few there and they aren't gonna miss a deal. Now that I am a used carlot owner, I spend the winter months stacking up cars while they are down in price and sell them all starting in January. Jan-Mar is the WORST time to buy a car because everyone is getting their tax checks. The price of used cars SKYROCKETS to fill all the note lots and people have plenty of money for down payments. Carlots go from survival techniques to let's get rich again. GOOD LUCK!

My Husband works as a mechanic for a dealership, and you can get a great deal on (lets say you want a 2007) a 2007 around August or September because that is when the new models for 2008 start coming out.

In the Northeast, dealers are experiencing slow sales during the winter time, particularly around the holidays, which is no surprise.

But also tie in that time of year with the end of the month. Monthly quotas are huge motivators to have dealer offer more attractive deals.

Year end model clearance is nice, but within a few months you take a HUGE two-year depreciation hit should you decide you really want/need a different vehicle.

It all depends on which manufacturer your looking at. All manufacturer's have different incentives at different times of the year. Always check with edmunds and other automotive websites to keep up to date with current incentives. Of course the end of the model year is always a good time to shop because you can get big rebates or excellent interest rates. Again it depends on manufac. and sometimes even model.

September right before the new ones come out is the best time and at Christmas time the dealers are really slow and will bargain.

You just missed it. You will get the best deal towards the end of the year when they are clearing out for the new year models. Plus they have holiday specials, etc.

Car sales are all year round go to the one nearest you and find out when there sales will occur!!

around november after thanksgiving they are trying to get rid of that years models for when they bring in the new years models
