Be sure to not only stop in major cities like Paris and London, but the surrounding smaller cities. They have much more flavor and less tourists than the large cities.

I really enjoyed Austria while I was touring Europe. The people in Austria, Innsbruck, Salzberg, and Gratz were very nice people. The Alps are gorgeous. If you are able, go to Switzerland's carnivale capital, Lucerne. The city is so nice with a very rich history.

AS for Italy.. well I didn't enjoy Rome very much, but Venice is worth a see and so it the rest of Tuscany and Florence is unbelievably beautiful.

The weather in December and January ranges between about 75F and 80F. Mostly during the day it'll be around 80F, dropping several degrees in the evening. This is also the high tourist season, so there will be more crowds. However, they don't ever reach the numbers in the Bahamas (tourism to the TCI is about 20% that of the Bahamas). I wouldn't worry about the crowds. The main negative would probably be the rough water, as this is generally a windier period. If you could come earlier in the year, the weather would probably be better, but overall the weather is quite constant year-round.

Can't give you a whole itinerary, but I think dealing with the weather in Eastern cities like Prague and Budapest is worth it. You see them as they truly are, and deal with fewer tourists. I used to live it Prague, and loved it best in winter. Also, I had the best vacation ever in Budapest in terrible weather, because funny little mishaps happen in the snow (some SO funny) and all the castles and statues look eerily gorgeous. Enjoy Europe! and don't forget to visit a traditional bathhouse when you need to be warmed up. Hilarious!
