I had 2 kids with no pain meds. They both weighed over 9 lbs & were entirley differenty birth expericences. Labor & delivery is a pain that can not be described. Its one of those things that you have to experiecne to have any understaning of.
The advice I give women is that you have to be very educated & mentally focused to birth w/o meds. Even the most committed of us Natural Birthers ask for pain relief. However, that is why having a birthing team (midwives, educated partner ETC) is critical.
When I was laboring with my daughter (1st delivery) at one point I started asking for pain meds. My midwife said, "sure, we can get you a narcotic" Her tone was sympathetic & sincere. And those words were all I needed to hear...It re-focused me in why I chose to go med free!
The labor was very difficult, I pushed for 3 hours and was at the max time limit; I was facing a c-section.
And..I would not change one minute of the experience...not one minuet.
Furthermore, had I had pain meds I fully believe that because of the effects of those meds I would have been forced to have a c-section.
The #1 rule for birthing is that every intervention you have, leads you one step closer to a c-section; induction, pain meds, internal monitors Etc, Etc, Im sure you get the point. If you are leaning towards a natural birth (not just a vaginal birth) educate yourself!!!! And, dont listen to anyone else. Make choices based on facts and on the birth experience that you want. I have had more than one woman tell me (to my face) that I was "stupid" for not having an epidual. No, THEY are the ones who are uneducated and deined themslevs a passage in life that goes way beyond anything words can communiate. Your body was designed to give birth! Many of the reasons or excuses women have for the trauma they experience in birth is because the don't understand the Natural Birth Process.

I have had two natural births and wouldn't change a thing. Pain in and of itself carries no risks, unlike an epidural. There are pages of complications associated with epidurals (spinal headaches, nerve damage, or non-effective pain relief, etc.). I won't get into them here, the risks are minimal, but there is no benefit to having an epidural outside of blocking out the sensations of your baby being born. It does hurt, but it is such a brief part your life and so life-changing. Why block it out?
The most important part of natural labor is a team that believes that you can do it. If you want to see how it goes and decide during labor, make sure everyone knows you will ask for meds when you want them. People asking you only undermines your strength to handle labor. And always get checked before you decide about an epidural, you may much farther than the last time you were checked!
Women have been having babies for thousands of years without pain meds, you can too!
Hugs and healthy birth vibes your way!!!
To the post above me...my first baby was a difficult forcep delivery and my second a breeze, so I don't think the drugs have anything to do with how your labors turned out. But if you have to have drugs, I'm sure you would have chosen them for you first, not your second!

Each person reacts to the pain of childbirth differently.
A friend decided to try the natural birth vs. meds. She even had 2 midwives ready.
Birth time came and after a few hours of intense pain, she was taken to hospital and medicated.
She had a second child, and there was absolutely no question whether to take the medication. She did.
Another friend had no problem whatsoever. She was in hospital room waiting during her contractions, got out of bed, started jumping up and down to hurry little baby along. Child was born within 3 hours. Both healthy and happy.
Go figure!
Do some research, no one has the "right" answer for you, something you must answer for yourself. No matter what your decision, you will be okay and you can change your mind if its too much for you.
Good luck.

Don't let people scare you, natural birth is not really any more painful than with meds the only thing meds take care of is the pain of the contractions and they usually only give you meds right at the end of labor anyway so it is usually only a little more of what you are experiencing anyway. Natural hormones block the pain of the stretching down below so you really don't need meds and it is better for you and the baby. You for a quicker recovery time and in the baby it can make them groggy and slow heart rate.

I had both my kids w/o drugs. As you can see from all the answers, it is different for everyone. I can say that it wasn't pleasant but it wasn't horrible either. I'll admit, I wanted drugs right before it was time to push (both times) but by then it was too late. The pushing is not as bad as the time right before the pushing. I even had a tear that was stiched up after w/o any meds - it can be done. The biggest thing is play it by ear - do what you can. I think trying to go drug free is a good thing but don't feel like you can't ask for drugs. There is no shame in changing your mind. I was lucky. My labor was short but I also had "complications" - one kid came out face up, the other kid came out sideways. If any of my friends asked my advice, I would tell them the same thing - trying to go drug free is great but don't suffer needlessly if you change your mind. Just keep telling yourself, it can be done.

I have done it both ways, and let me tell you that honestly my experience with medicine was far better than without. I know there are many arguments for "natural" childbirth being better. For me the experience was night and day. My daughter was 24 hours of labor, multiple episiotomies, and horrible pain, followed by my daughter having to go to the NICU, because they pulled her out with forceps which gave her huge hemitomas and bruising...so I didn't get to enjoy holding her in the first minutes of her life.
Now, with my son, a couple years later, with my son, I had an epidural, and he was delivered in 8 hours with minimal episiotomies, no complications and I got to actually enjoy the experience.
Now, you may have a different experience...but if I could give you advice, I would say, use the medication and enjoy your birth experience.

I only had one shot of nubain( I have no idea how to spell it) with my first. The pain was bad, but tolerable. My second one the labor lasted longer and I had two shots of nubain. I never had a epideral. I'm very proud of myself. But, honestly I could not have done it without some pain medication. Don't go in there saying I'm going all natural, because you might decide to get some meds and you don't want to feel bad about doing it. Just go in there and say, "I'm going to hold out as long as I can, if I need help with the pain, I'll get help." Best of luck to you!

Well, the first time i had natural childbirth.
At first i felt real sick like i had the flu. I was pooing and barfing and felt real sick.
Which moved onto having to poo so bad that i was standing andsitting on the toilet like crazy...it was from the pressure of thinking i had to go but really didn't. I though I was going to die my stomach hurt so bad,.
Got to the hospital was at 8. Was screaming for drugs...wanted anything.
Felt liek my crotch was going to rip open.
So tired I just wanted to sleep.
I was in an extreme amount of pain.
Then you get this urge to push and when you start to, if you rip you can feel it. YOu don't want to push. I mean it really hurts. I was scraeming at the top of my lungs.
With my second i treid to hold out but said forget it, i was scared of the needle for the epidural in the end i got it and that needle wasnothing compared to those contractions.
Get the epidural...natural is no way to go.

all birth--PAINFUL!!!! think about it. Go into it w/ no expectations. Nothing set in stone, "I am having this I am not having this." Just roll w/ it, see how your body handles it-the pain. If it hurts, & it will, try to deal w/ it, if you can't go for the epidural. I have friends said epidural was GREAT they felt nothing. I had it, it never worked for me, 2 kids, so...It is only for 1 day, it'll all be over, everyone handles it, youve never heard a baby who didnt come out! You will do great! Good luck!

I went all natural the second time, and I actually enjoyed my experience. I won't lie, it did hurt. It wasn't unmanageable, though. I had a great support system and used several laboring techniques (including walking, breathing, warm jet bath, etc). It was such an empowering experience. The whole key is to remain calm and trust your body.
