Uric acid crystals build up in joints if you have too many for your liver to filter out of your blood. This can lead to gout. Which I have never heard of in the neck before but it is a joint so i guess it is possible.
I had gout once, due to a medication, the doctor gave me a list of food to avoid that would decrease the uric acid in my system. I would go to web md if i where you and read about gout.
I have never heard of this causing your neck to pop, but mine does to, perhaps you have led me to a cure for my neck popping too.

It's got nothing to do with uric acid! Too much uric acid causes gout, which is extremely painful and I should know! It gets you in the feet, normally. If it's just clicking without any pain I wouldn't worry too much, lots of joints can click and crack but it's not generally serious.

My neck started clicking loudly about 5 years ago, but am now so old I've become used to my body producing interesting new effects. Did not realise it happened to young people too. I find doing a good set of stretches first thing reduces the clicks, and the pertinent one here is the neck roll - you know the one I mean ?about 6 rolls each way in the morning.
Don't attempt this while cleaning your teeth.

I have that too! My mom said I need to stretch my neck in different directions. Actually, I had it last summer, then it went away and came back in mid January.
