in southern california ( you now have to dial area code and the number
*even if the call is a local number
like if you are calling from Santa Monica (where the area code is 310,) and you were calling say Malibu (again 310)
you will have to dial
1310 the number..

OK FutureModel...there are so many people in huge American cities they need more numbers and area codes, Do not put a 1 in front of the number....that is for long distance only. A number of U.S. cities do this now...So. Cal has a long list of possible area codes....Jezzzz their are 10 MILLION people in L.A. COUNTY alone...AND THAT DOESN'T INCLUDE ORANGE COUNTY which has millions more....

It is just the "area code". You can get a listing of them in your phone book (usually in the front), or you can look up lists by searching online.
