I can understand your fear of rejection, rejection was my middle name back in school. Come to think of it, it was my first and last names too!
The worst thing that could happen is that she may say "no" or her boyfriend might beat you up. Sometimes a "hot" girl is not so hot in the personality department, you may have someone who is actually better for you that you have overlooked. Try not to be fooled by surface appearances and look into the character and value of girls who may be "plain".
I can tell you from experience, while I was being an idiot and swooning over the "hot" girls at school, there was someone I totally missed who was much more compatible than any of the good lookers. This girl was actually quite pretty, but I didnt see it. I didnt see anything until it was too late.
I guess you could just ask then duck.

First you should start hanging out with her and ask her questions to see what kind of stuff she likes. Like what kind of movies, music, etc. she likes. Ask her if she wants to hang out with you and your friends at some point, but then be mindful and don't let her feel uncomfortable there (maybe you should invite her friends too?) Then, ask her out on a date.
The key there is to take baby steps. If she doesn't know you she will probably not want to go out with you.

girls whether they show it or not are just as nervous. sometimes girls can get confused. if you have been giving off signs that you like her (leading her on) then to not ask her out will make her think there is something wrong with herself. If she is very popular then you should ask her when shes alone, and if shes shy just be very soft and if she says no, shes probably just not ready.

from my shyness just by thinking really dedicated to ONE thing:
