with this puppy, we've been trying to train him to the blue pads, and he'll go on there, but everytime we let him out of that room he poops on the carpet (only 2 rooms have carpet) and pees everywhere, we spank him and tell him no, and he still does it. AND he's now started tearing up the blue pads. I'm about to give up with him, what do u think?

These kinds of things should have been reseached and considered before you got the dog. Those piddle pads only encourage the dog to "use it" indoors. Perhaps you could try reading up on crate training when done correctly it works. Common sense should tell you the puppy should have no unsupervised freedom in the house until he is completely house broken. I think if the only reason you do not want to get rid of the pup is because of how much you spent, you should find this pup another home.

You may want to consult a professional dog trainer. One that uses POSITIVE reinforcement NOT a bully type. Your #1 mistake is letting the pup have free roam of your house. The ONLY time he should be allowed on the carpeted areas is right after a successful potty time. Spanking a pup gets you nowhere. The pup is confused as to what is expected of him. Try training directly to the outdoors instead of on puppy pads. Use a crate to keep him confined if your potty sessions are not successful. Praise him to the best of your ability when does do a good deed. There are so many things that goes into potty training..... call that professional trainer!

Sounds like you may want to start house training him! He may not be able to understand the difference between going on the carpet with the pad over it and just going on the carpet!

Get a kennel for him and keep him in the kennel when you are unable to supervise him. As soon as you let him out of the kennel, take him outside. Stay with him and say "go potty" until he goes potty, then praise him and take him inside.

Do the same thing 30-45 minutes after he eats and after any naps.

Training a puppy will take a LONG time, but if you keep at it, he'll get it!

Make sure you stop hitting him! Dogs will start to hide where they go to the bathroom if you hit them when they go inside. If he has accidents inside, take him outside immediately and say "potty outside."

He'll get the idea. Make sure you clean up all the old spots really well so he doesn't try to "mark" them. You may even want to get them shampooed!

Good luck!

Ok, stop 'spanking' what you are teaching your puppy to do is to toilet when you are not watching because you have effectively taught it that toileting and you are a bad mix.

Grow some patience, because this is a puppy.

You should never let a puppy out of your sight, you should always be watching your puppy and taking it out to toilet regularly or placing it on its' toileting pad so it does not have an accident.

The dog is not toileting correctly at the moment because of a combination of 2 things:

1) You've hit it and created fear
2) You haven't toilet trained correctly, the dog doesn't understand what you want yet.

When your dog has an accident inside and you catch them, give a firm 'No' and take your dog to the site where you want them to do it and say "toilet" once the dog toilets you praise the dog to let it know that is what you want....you'll never toilet train or train a dog to do anything without praise.

Remember you can NEVER repremand a dog for doing something that you did not see....dogs are not humans they don't understand what they did wrong, all they understand is that you're giving off angry body language and tone of voice.

First of all, never, never, hit a dog, or any animal, for that matter. That's not only abuse, but it does'nt have any affect, on training a puppy. You have to remember that this puppy, is doing what every single puppy out there does. Potty training, does not happen over night. There will most definitely be some accidents, until he's trained the right way. Sometimes, it even takes months to get them totally potty trained. Have you looked into crate training him? I don't know how old your puppy is, but puppies are just like little babies. They don't just automatically know what they are supposed to do. You have to teach them properly, and praise them whenever they go to the bathroom where they are supposed to.

Patience is a must if you are to be a puppy owner.
Bear in mind that the wee soul is a baby, so why are you smacking him?
Take him out every 30-60 mins and when he relieves himself outside praise him. He will soon catch on.
Dont make a big fuss if he soils indoors, just clean it up. Otherwise you will scare him into hiding in corners of the house to do the toilet instead!

Within a few months you will have a toilet trained companion that you will love forever.

Keep your patience, he is a puppy and don't forget, we humans had to be Potty trained too(lol). When we got our puppy we kennel trained her and all rooms were off limits except the kitchen where there is no rugs and we could keep an eye on her. When she started sniffing we would pick her up and take her outside right away even if she had already started to go. When he wakes up, don't let him walk round, pick him up right away and take him outside and when he goes. praise him. You should also be able to predict his schedule now and have an idea when to take him out.

Good Luck and Remember, NO Scolding or Hitting

puppies will be puppies, he is tearing the pads up because you corrected him and thats him letting his frustration out, if he is real young then he has a small bladder and cant hold it that long and just goes everywhere. the best I can say is keep at it and maybe try to train him outside instead of on pads.

The first thing you need to do is stop hitting your dog. It will teach him to hide and urinate where you can't see him. Puppies cannot hold themselves for long periods of time. Try putting your dog in a crate, then take him outside. If he relieves himself give him lots of praise and bring him in. If he doesn't go , bring him back in to his crate and try again 15 or 20 minutes later. You can control his bowl movements by putting him on a schedule. Feed him at the same time every day. You can also try to restrict where he urinates by putting a leash on him and tethering it to your waist. Good Luck

He's a puppy! Puppies will do this for months until they learn, just get used to it, buy more pads, or keep him confined to a kennel. If you walk him twice a day and let him outside every 20 minutes, you won't have any problems, but you have to make an effort.
